Lakers signing Montrezl Harrell to 2-year, $19M deal

The Los Angeles Lakers are signing free-agent forward Montrezl Harrell to a two-year, $19-million contract, Harrell's agent Rich Paul told ESPN's Brian Windhorst.

The second season of the deal contains a player option.

Harrell won the league's 2019-20 Sixth Man of the Year award while playing for the Los Angeles Clippers, the Lakers' in-arena rival.

The 26-year-old becomes Lakers vice president of basketball operations Rob Pelinka's latest high-profile acquisition this offseason. The team recently acquired Dennis Schroder - another player who was in the mix for Sixth Man of the Year honors with Harrell - along with Wesley Matthews.

Harrell's stunning departure appears to have irked former teammate Patrick Beverley, who expressed his disapproval of the move on social media.

Harrell averaged 18.6 points and 7.1 rebounds while shooting 58% from the field in 63 games last season.

Man, they just brought back Markief Morris.  Lakers are so deep with at least 11 guys getting minutes regularly.  Could run a potential starting unit similar to last season with size (KCP, Wes Matthews, Bron, AD, Gasol), defense and better spacing due to Gasol's ability to shoot from distance; then, run a second unit (Schroder, Caruso, Kuz, Kieff, Harrell) with 3 guys who could routinely flirt with 20 pts.  That's not even considering trying to get THT on the floor OR who may come for the last 2 vet minimums.

Crazy that the World Champs just got better!  AND, new season starts in less than one month.

I admit that I was wrong on how Pelinka would do running the org. He's had a really great couple of offseasons. This one was a really busy one. I can see why the AD deal seemingly took so long. His agent was already busy with the Harrell, KCP, and LeBron deals (I think Rich Paul has quietly become the Scott Boras of the NBA). The details have not been released that I've seen, but I'm really happy they locked up AD in the prime of his career for the max length instead of the shorter deal with more opt outs. They worked quickly, made really solid moves (Schroeder, Matthews, Gasol, etc), and are loaded for another title run.
