I'm sure they will bring up some bum from single A that will shutout the Angels and look like Greg Maddux against us but suck every other start.

Really too bad for baseball. DeGrom was, for a few years (2018-21), Pedro-esque. During that span, he pitched 581 innings with a 1.94 ERA, 11.99 K% and 1.84 BB% rates, accruing 23.5 WAR. 119 walks and 774 Ks. Prorated to 200 innings:

200 IP, 1.94 ERA, 8.1 fWAR, 41 walks, 266 Ks.

That's about as good as Kershaw's best year (2015).

His 2018 season at 9.0 WAR was the 6th highest of the 21st century. The only guys to have higher fWAR seasons during that time are Randy Johnson (x3), Pedro, and Curt Schilling. Pedro ptiched the same amount of innings in 2000 for 9.4 WAR, so it is basically as good as his second best season (Pedro's 1999 was 11.6 fWAR in 213 IP, the best pitching year in baseball history, by inning). All of Randy's and Curt's one year were 30+ IP more.

Ok, that was partly right.

Through 2020, he only missed some extensive time in 2016 (a quarter of his starts).

Starting beginning of 2021 season,  he will have had the equivalent of only one full season pitched over close to a 4 seasons span upon return in late 2024 season.
