Rosenthal: "Prospective buyers may not want a manager with a long term contract, perhaps the solution is to extend Nevin for one year"

The short-term outlook is so bleak, the choice of a manager seems almost inconsequential. But here, too, the Angels are in a weird spot. Prospective buyers might not want Moreno to award a new manager a contract of say, three years. Then again, the Angels’ outside options will be limited if they are only willing to go short-term. Perhaps the solution is to extend Nevin for one year and leave the decision on a permanent manager to the new owner

This would be worse. A winning team would bring more revenue, and that would be appealing to new buyers.

Nevin is a horrible manager, who has done nothing to deserve a permanent role.

I agree, but on the other hand, why would a decent manager want to sign a long-term deal with the Angels before new ownership was in place and/or before the Ohtani situation was resolved?  Might be hard to find someone willing to take on that role until things are a little clearer.

This team needs a blank slate. Trade Ohtani, trade Trout, pile on prospects to get Rendon off the books, and eat next year as a losing season.

Then once the sale goes through, the prospects will begin maturing. You'll have nothing on the books, a young, dynamic roster and a new owner worth money burning a hole in his pocket, looking to make his mark.

Nevin’s contract isn’t the issue. He’s not going to be paid much to begin with and he won’t get multiple years. The issue is that you can’t recruit good coaches based on the uncertainty, especially a hitting coach.  It’s better to let Minasian make a hire, which will probably not be a former manager but rather a good assistant coach on another team who is comfortable with using analytics. If an owner is paying 2 billion, buying out a manager’s contract wouldn’t be a stumbling block.

This is not a winning team. Worse team in Angel history. Buy your Logic Tampa would be more appealing than halos. Seven straight losing seasons.

Or do the Guggenheim thing.

Doyyers were not in good shape when Guggenheim purchased them.

They took on short term big salaries to acquire other talent with it.

In concert, they also spent on a much improved infrastructure (coaches, scouts, development).

Don’t need to trade Trout, but Ohtani is the question mark.

I agree.  Don’t trade Trout unless you have to, but I don’t see Arte putting major bucks into the 2023 season.  I expect Minasian to have his usual budget and to sign several one year FAs but to trade Ohtani.

This presumes that Trout could even be traded. The Angels would likely have to eat a bunch of his contract and wouldn't get much back in return. He is on the wrong side of 30, and has spent substantial portions of the past two seasons not playing.

Trout still has positive value. He hasn't stopped hitting at an elite pace and is 30. Any team would effectively be signing him to a 7 year deal with 34 million a year, which is likely what he'd get on the open market. If he waived the NTC, some smart contender would slide him in at LF/DH to keep him healthy and enjoy the best hitter in major league baseball for the next few years.

Now granted, you're not getting franchise shattering return, but that money would be off the books, which, as we've seen with Raisel Iglesias, is the main component of the return.

They aren't going to rebuild. The Nationals did this because they had already lost Rendon, Scherzer, Trea, Zimmerman, et al and were clearly in a bad place. Arte will try and pump up the value as much as possible. The appeal will be Trout, Ohtani, and probably a team designed to be competitive. I think it is much more likely Arte spends to upgrade the team next year than he trades away Ohtani or rebuilds in any way.

I think the prospective managerial candidate would want to manage the Angels for two reasons.

1. Money

2. Money
