“[The Angels] plan to interview for a permanent manager this winter” and “will conduct a full-scale managerial search after the year.”

“The Angels were hoping Nevin could jump-start the team after they fired Maddon. Not even close. It’s hardly Nevin’s fault, but they plan to interview for a permanent manager this winter.“

Not a surprise, but I figured this was thread-worthy because it’d been a while since we’ve heard about the Angels future managerial plan and this at least establishes they aren’t gonna just hand Nevin the managerial job in 2023 without considering other candidates.

Heyman: “The Angels, who actually seem to be getting worse, will conduct a full-scale managerial search after the year.”

Of course they are going to "interview".   AKA covering their @ss.

  • So far no one has put forth a better choice than Nevin.
  • Add to that the players respect him;
  • the team has improved in all facets since he took over.
  • Nevin has turned things around in the past 20 games,
  • All without his 2 highest paid players and losing a SP and his closer to the trade deadline.

Pretty good resume which will be tough to beat.

Of course the Angels can bring in an 2002 guy like Erstad, Kingfish, or Spezio.

Right when Pujols' ten-year personal services contract is set to begin!

Welcome back to Anaheim, mang!

It'll be like the equivalent of getting an injured player back at the ASB instead of making a deal.

"We already had him under contract and no one brings more leadership or presence than him, he's a first ballot HOFer."

If the Angels bring in a “2002 guy” I will view it as evidence they don’t know how to pick a manager.

Phil, is that you?

I predict nearly the entire coaching staff is flushed and Minasian starts over with his own selections. Maddon's crew really did nothing impressive over the past 3 seasons and I have no confidence in Nevin as well.

How the players react will be interesting, some have seen three coaching staffs over the last five seasons.

I'm still shocked how a lot of these national writers are employed. Look at Jon Heyman's Ohtani stories. All he did was write what was completely obvious and put a few quotes in it. There was never any insider info.

Love how you can be a Captain Obvious and make bank.

Here's a few Article title that'll make hits this Winter:

"Ohtani wants to win, might request a trade"
"Ohtani and Trout express frustration with front office"
"Are Ohtani's days with the Angels coming to an end?"
"Ohtani extension [Unlikely], Ohtani wants to play for winner"
"Ownership to hold internal meet to take organization in different direction"

I am struck by the term "permanent manager" in the thread title.  LOL, no manager is permanent in this game.

Legend has it that Dickey Rothchild was contracted to be the permanent manager of the 1904 Tallahassee Gator Legs and even after his death in 1910, they kept his embalmed body on the bench for 6 more years because a deal is a deal. He was later replaced by Robert Bobbledong as part of an estate sale. They went on to win 6 games that year because Bobbledong was both blind and mentally challenged. Later it was determined he was actually just a garden gnome.

Managers don't make that much difference in the sucess of a MLB team. You could have turned the Dodgers over to a High School coach and they would still win 95 to 100 games. Pitchers win games. Not managers.

I used to think this way also, but in Dave Roberts early days as the Dodgers manager, there were plenty of Dodger fans who would have disagreed with you on this.

poor management is just magnified when your team is shitty.
