What now for Barria?

So, with Detmers being named the 6th starter, that leaves Jaime Barria in a tough spot.

Is it as simple as "yeah he's in the bullpen and will be an emergency starter"? Probably. But he did struggle out of the pen last year (albeit in a small sample size).

But being that he has no options, that puts the team in a tough spot as well. They have to keep him on the roster, or they lose him.

Can they trade him? Again, yeah probably. But other GM's will know the situation and aren't going to give up much for him, and I'd hate to see a guy like Barria let go for nothing or for a journeyman reliever.

I guess we'll find out soon enough.

They should tandem start him with Lorenzen until this all works itself out naturally.

I mean he's going to get starts, regardless. Someone will get hurt at some point and probably this month.

But he can't be stretched out in AAA before then. So you get a guy filling in throwing 3-4 innings per "start". I guess it's a good thing we stocked up the bullpen.

If they’re smart they should be able to find room for him in long relief and when inevitably someone gets hurt

They’ve gotta put him in the bullpen.  He’ll pitch as a starter for them this year.  It would be fucking crazy for them to let him get away.

Barria has been bad as a reliever.  Been solid as a starter.  Therefore concerns of his performance out of the pen are valid.

I am hoping having a well pronounced role in the bullpen and not shuttling back and forth forth to Salt Lake City will allow him to focus and produce

You keep him unless you package him for a starter.

I felt like a cool thing for them to adopt would have been allowing a mutual option year that would cost maybe 150k.  Both team and player would have to agree and the player would get paid mlb salary if he were in the minors.  You could only do it once per player.

Anyway, they'll likely have to make a decision on barria by the end of the month when the rosters shrink down again.
