What's crazy is he doesn't seem like he's running that fast in real time. Kind of reminds me of Devon White. You couldn't tell how fast he could really run until he got those strides going on a triple or running a ball down in the outfield.

Exactly. I watched it several times to see if he was busting his ass down the line, but it looked as if he was just striding normally to the bag.

The War Machine Rolls On:

Shohei now leads MLB with 6.1 bWAR (1.1 WAR ahead of DeGrom and Gausman)

And also leads MLB in fWAR with 5.8 (0.4 WAR ahead of DeGrom)

By both measures he is on track for 10+ WAR

He pitched 6 scoreless innings last night lowering his ERA to 3.21 with 1.16 WHIP and a 95.5MPH average fastball velocity for the season, while also leading all of MLB in Statcast's Barrels% and Line Drive Exit velocity; plus Extra Base Hits, Slugging%, and Home Runs with 34.

Shohei is on track to hit 60 Home Runs and Steal 20 bases alongside pitching 125 innings of 95mph 3 ERA ball.

That NY start skews it so much. Sucks.

That last paragraph is insane. Who knows if he can keep it up, especially over several seasons. But for now, we're witnessing about the greatest individual season in the games history, IMO.

Best player in baseball, objectively and subjectively.

Until Trout comes back. Then there will be two best players in baseball on the Angels.

I think this season we are witnessing the passing of the baton from Trout to Shohei as Best Player in Baseball.

Sure, no-one has matched Trout's consistency, but right now it's difficult to make an argument that Trout is more talented or plays better baseball than Shohei when both are healthy.

Trout hits for higher average and has higher OBP. Ohtani probably edges it for slugging and isolated power, barrels etc. Shohei steals bases at a fair clip, Trout doesn't steal any more. They both beat out infield singles and both run like a train on the base paths. Trout's defence has fallen to around league average and Shohei does a bit in RF now and again and fields the mound quite well, so there's an edge for Trout there but not much of one. So as a hitter and fielder Trout edges it, as a baserunner and slugger maybe Shohei but it's close, and then there's the pitching: 125 innings as a starter with ERA and FIP in the low threes (and falling) from a 100mph fastball, an un-hittable splitter and a wicked slider. It's incomparable.

I love Trout and really hope he comes back and plays so well that he makes an argument of it again, but he will have to put up some amazing numbers to match Shohei's all round game. Can't wait to see them both in the line-up again.

Whatever happens it's fantastic for us as fans to have two absolute superstars of the game and contenders for the GOAT playing at the same time on the same team, and both being throughly nice blokes with it too. Simply marvellous.

"Ohtani accounted for 28 percent of all 2021 All-Star Game merchandise sales. Fanatics started selling Ohtani memorabilia last week; not only did the 2018 AL Rookie of the Year quickly become baseball's No. 1 athlete on the site, but his sales outrank the No. 2 MLB player 10 times over.

Since July 1, in memorabilia and merchandise, Ohtani is the top-selling athlete on Fanatics across all sports, which includes hundreds of professional and collegiate teams."

Think i already mentioned this, but...

On the official MLB auction site, the average trout jersey (signed) is about 1K

The 2 homerun against Balt Ohtani jersey was at 71K last weekend.

The Tatis and Vladito ASG gane used jerseys were at about 2K this weekend

Ohtani's was at 110K

Thats insane

Ill take Trout w the bat, pretty much anyday

But Ohtani is the better player. Nobody can touch him.

He may fall to earth, AJ may jinx him to eternity. But what hes done this year is unbelievable. The talent is unmatched.

Does this mean he's good for baseball?

I couldn't get it all on Twitter but I summarized your post pretty well. Good shit, @WicketMaiden.
