Ty Buttrey needs a damn break.

Recommended Posts

He’s pitched in 5 of 7 games.  In the last 2 weeks he has a 1.76 whip.  A hideous ERA.  They’ve leaned on him way too much early on and I hate how many times they’ve tried to run him out for multi inning efforts.  Put him on the IL for a couple of weeks and let the arm have a break.  He had pitched 16 total major league innings before this year.  He’s more then doubled that and it’s June.  It would be nice to not destroy this guy.

He pitched 63.2 innings in 2017 and then another 8.1 in the AFL that year

He pitched 65.1 innings last year.

He's on pace for about 75 this year.

I agree he's probably a littler over worked right now but they've needed his innings.

They've been rolling with 7 relievers a fair amount.

Cam, Robles, and Noe have all pitched about the same amount.  Noe needs to stay the long guy.  Garcia sucks.  Cole is iffy.  Anderson has been inconsistent at best.

I'm not sure what to do to be honest.  You've got to win those close games if you're going to have any shot whatsoever and he's by far the best option to help the team do that.

Maybe you over extend him a bit now in hopes that he can bridge some innings to Middleton when he returns.  Overall, the team is about middle of the pack in relief innings if you subtract out the guys following the opener.

Wouldn’t you agree that minor league innings are far more controlled then major league ones.  Buttrey has been used a lot in condensed periods of time.  I get what you’re saying about the limited alternatives but still.  At some point, early in the season I think it’s ok to measure the usage of an important young pitcher.  Even if it may make it a little tougher to win some games.

Eppler needs to find another arm, either by trade or on the farm, that can give Robles, Bedrosian, and Buttrey a break.  Anderson COULD be that guy but, just when you think he's turned a corner he reverts back to 2018-form.  Garcia was just a bad get...he's been wilder and has missed less bats since coming over from Phillies for Alvarez (he hasn't been much better with the Phillies at 4.26 ERA 1.500 WHIP 107 ERA+).  Pena, Noe Ramirez, and Cole are hit and miss but they are valuable due to being able to go multiple innings.

The wild cards in this are JC Ramirez and Middleton.  Either JC Ramirez pushes Pena to the BP or JC becomes a guy who can go 2-3 innings.  Middleton, if healthy, could be that arm to mix with Robles, Bedrosian and Buttrey.  It's likely why Eppler hasn't made a move yet.

One more vital acquisition though that could help the BP?  A starter.

I'm not talking about a MadBum deal where he'll be going to free agency the following season...but a deal like the one that got us Dan Haren, with a couple seasons left and an eye towards 2020.  Right now, Skaggs and Canning are a decent shot to get to at least 6 innings...Heaney could if he wasn't getting beaten like a soapy dick all the time (credit to Glen)...Suarez and Pena are good for 5 innings, Barria only went 6 innings a handful of times last season, Tropeano and Peters are not to be counted on either.

They need at least a 2 starter that can give a legit shot at 6+ innings every night otherwise you'll be leveraging the lesser relievers in tighter situations more than you want and the tier 1 guys more in general.

JC & Middleton are both coming back from TJ.

1. JC was a starter. he will require more time to bounce back from multiple inning outings. 2 - 2/3 inning outings per week is max. Unfortunately, we've needed someone to do this almost on a every game basis! Or, at least be available to do this every game to rest the other guys!

2.. Middleton was a late inning guy 2/3 - 1 inning outings per week is max. But, not for an extended period.

JC has been ramping up to 100 pitches at SLC...they are positioning him as a starter so it might be moot to discuss him as a BP option.  I think Pena moves to the BP and Ramirez gets the "opener" treatment.

Middleton is getting ready to pitch to live batters soon.  When he's finished his rehab, likely in July, and he's promoted, he'll likely be leveraged like Robles, Buttrey and Bedrosian unless health or performance dictate otherwise.  If he stumbles or has something like "shoulder inflammation/fatigue", you might see a deadline deal from Eppler but I think he's banking on these two to provide some needed depth to the BP

If we dont start getting more innings from our starters we will falter.. the bullpen cant pitch the bulk of the game every night even with the daily shuttle to SLC.
It isnt even the number of innings, its pitching every day or 4-5 times a week.  Even for just an inning thats going to kill an arm when a guy is throwing 95+

Whatever the case, he looked crappy giving up a game winning HR to a scrub like McKinney.

Why else has he looked crappy in June after two brilliant months?

It’s possible that’s his early success was unsustainable and he’s just getting to his actual level now.

Did you think he was going to go all year with a 1.30 ERA?
