$28.5M spent on pitching in free agency...

What did you expect?  All three were basically reclamation project that could be had on the one year deals we were seeking.  It was clear we were going to over pay or commit long term to anything.  If they worked out he was a genius, if not, well, noone should be surprised.

The same thing was true on the offense signings, but some of those have worked out much better while others (Bour) have not.  Basically he got 2 out of 6 with Lucroy and LaStella working to date, not great odds.

But... it comes back to expectations and understanding what the goal for the year was.  As fans, we hoped for the best but the reality of it is that it was a tread water season from the start with the hopes that some might find a little magic to buy time to get to the real intended players for those spots.

None of them will be here next year, and this team will be much better after they are gone after a couple guys prove healthy and a couple more prove ready.  We will not be hurting for pitching in 20.

Yeah as others have said be glad we didnt overspend on some of what was out there that many here wanted.  Thats not the issue though, the issue is that SP is the one spot where the farm is getting ready to kick in bigtime.   Epp did what he had to do in the hopes that if things broke right we would be in the think of it while we waiting on that crop to ripen, unfortunately they havent broken right.

Not surprised that they are bad. Surprised that they are THIS bad though. But, who cares? Low risk, high reward. These types of signings end up in busts more often than not. It's just unfortunate that at least one of these losers could not put it together.

I don't disagree that he could have spent a lot more on FA's who haven't panned out---Evoldi and Miller for instance, as Strad says.....but 30 million is a lot of money....combined they are not low risk because they were basically our entire off season budget, where the emphasis was on upgrading the pitching....and we've gotten nothing in return...

He should have done what he has always done, wait until the market comes down and find those bargain guys, that way if they pan out you look like a genius and if they don’t you only spent a few million.  Bottom line though if you expect to sign guys like Miley or Gio, guys who are performing and didn’t really get paid a lot, well you have to build a winner first or they won’t come here at that dollar amount.  Also, who gives two shits about whether Arte pays $28 million or $5 million on three guys for one year?  I certainly don’t care.  Bottom line we needed two guys, we got two guys, they haven’t performed.  It was a good risk because if they did perform you could swap them at the deadline.  You know wouldn’t be a good risk?  Signing Lance Lynn or any of the guys that got more than a one year deal because if your team doesn’t perform you are paying high dollars for non difference makers in years where you could spend more and get better.  The way free agency is going guys will get one year deals or they will get long term deals, there isn’t a lot in between.  The one year deals for the most part will be high dollar signings.

He almost did. In fact, I believe it was stated that Eovaldi was his top target this offseason. So yeah, it could have been worse.

Yep and he would have paid him less than $68 million.  And I believe the rumor was he offered 3 years and around $45 million.  So yes it could have been worse, but it wouldn’t have been as bad as it currently is for Boston.

The one guy worth all the money was Corbin.

Yep and Eppler wanted him but he wanted to go back east.   I thought he’d be a Yankee.

Let's hope Cole wants to come home and signs with the Angels. Hoping Arte opens up his wallet for him. We need a clear #1 outside of Ohtani IMO. Heaney, Canning, Skaggs and some of our prospects can fight it out for the remaining 3-4 spots assuming we go with a 6-man rotation.
