Question about Matt Shoemaker

If we retained Matt Shoemaker

  1. 1. And he had the same start to the season he has had in Toronto would you be thinking

    • Yes! He is finally healthy and ready to have that breakout season, great job Eppler!

    • He will soon be injured again. Will Eppler ever learn.

Depends. Had we signed him instead of Harvey, great move. could have used the other budget to upgrade catcher or 2B/RF. Had we signed him and still gotten Harvey, still not good enough.

I seriously do not get what Eppler was thinking giving Harvey that amount of money.

Shoe isn't great but obviously a steal compared to the Dick Knight

Yes he is a steal compared to Harvey.  But not if he throws 55 innings like he has averaged the two years prior.  Also MLB Trade Rumors who does a pretty good job of guessing contracts predicted Harvey at getting 2 years and $22 million.

You should probably go over to RoyalsWin and read their Brian Goodwin thread.

Great lets aspire to be as great as the Royals.

You guys seriously overrate the job Eppler has done.... or you have to say nice things because your job requires it. In 2014 Shoemaker went 16-4 with an ERA of 3.04 and was a huge reason the Angels won 99 games. That was a long time ago..... But so was Harvey's last good year. And yet you pay Harvey 11-14 million and let Shoemaker go for peanuts.... nice loyalty. Shoemaker has a better track record in his career than Harvey does. In production and in staying healthy.

It's not just "Oh it does not matter, it's only 1 year, we will be done with his contract soon.... it was worth a shot." By signing him you end up playing him and he actually contributes to more losses. It's not worth a shot. Eppler spent a lot of money this off-season on a bunch of crap. Instead go and get one good proven player and fill in the rest with the young guys that everyone here says are so great.

It is not just the Harvey signing.... Eppler has been awful at just about every player he has brought in on the big league level.

The Angels did nothing but win before Eppler showed up and have done nothing but lose since he got here. Every year the Angels have one of the highest payrolls in baseball but with Eppler they have never even had a .500 season.

The farm ONLY matters if it helps the ML team win....  no one cares if the single A team wins. Eppler may have done a good job with the farm.... but NO ONE knows yet. Rankings of farm systems do not mean anything. It gives you hope for the future but that is it. And based on how Eppler evaluates ML talent should not give anyone a lot of confidence in the farm until they actually come up here and play good baseball at the highest level.

My point was that it’s really too early to be evaluating anyone: Goodwin, Harvey, Shoemaker, etc.

Its April 20.

I realize as fans you look at things emotionally, but sometimes you need to take a breath and let it play out.

Weve already seen guys like La Stella, Jewell, Simmons, Allen and Lucroy be “great” and “awful” if you evaluate things in micro-slices.

The big league team has been decimated this year again by injuries.

I still think it’s a mistake to look at the Harvey signing as simply as “he isn’t worth $11m” or “he’ll never pitch like an ace”

Alongside with the hope he would return to some form of his old self and help the Angels win games, there is equal hope he’d turn into an interesting July trade piece where some other team would pay for his ace potential to help them in stretch run and playoffs.

He is trade bait. His cost was $11m to keep him to one-year and make him more attractive at the deadline.

And I would have non-tendered Tropeano, Ramirez, and Bedrosian before Shoemaker and maybe even Parker.

The Angels have definitely lost the championship of March and April. May ain't looking so good either. One DH returning ain't gonna solve the Angels' pitching shortcomings. PB -- the fourth outfielder --'is going to get a lot of playing time until at least the All-Star break.

Looking for some miracles right now.

Ooh I see where you’re going with this ?
