Why the Angels won't sign Yasmani Grandal

Second Base

Recommended Posts

The reason Grandal won't be an Angel is not his postseason performance as much as it is that Wison Ramos is available without surrendering a draft pick.

This team has no catcher.  They will add a catcher.

Ramos makes way too much sense considering his experience, his likely salary cost and that the Angels can get him without trading prospects and without giving up the draft pick.

Ramos will be an Angel.

He's had some bad moments in some high profile situations, but he's not nearly as bad as some of you are making him out to be.  That being said, I'd pass on him mostly because of the draft pick compensation the Dodgers would get.

Exactly. And I find it hard to believe after clearly stating he wants to have a top 5 farm system that Eppler would give away his second round pick and international money for a player like Grandal.

Then what are they waiting for, if it's so apparent?

There are lots of teams with lots of money to spend, this offseason. It's not like the Angel FO is operating in a vacuum.

Lots of teams need a catcher..................

Mostly agree, although his 2018 post-season defense left a LOT to be desired.

Patience grasshopper, see if the price comes down.   I'm sure Billy is all over it, and if someone else is perceived to be moving in on Ramos, then he will act.    Agree that Ramos >>> Grandal.

You answered your own question.

Lots of teams need a catcher. Lots of them are trying to get JT Realmuto. The free agents all figure they’ll be able to get more money once Realmuto goes off the board.

It will be easy to remember.............because it will still apply.

A team with the income stream of the Angels should not be frittering away FA opportunities till the bitter end. You snooze, you lose. Maybe for a fourth straight year.

but they don't compete for FA's in a vacuum.  Right?

so we should just give these guys enough years and money that all other market factors are irrelevant?  Hey Wilson, here's 4/60.

that seems like a solid strategy.

If we just give Harper $500 million we can check that off our to do list.

10 yr $360m

$40m for first 5 years, opt out for player after 4 or 5 years, then $32m per year for the last 5 years.

He is guaranteed $360m, but the structure would almost surely mean he opts out and is effectively a 5 year $200m deal for the team.

Harper would:

--Be landing the largest guaranteed contract ever beating Stanton's $325m,

--Get his 10 year deal

--Would be the highest paid player in baseball next year, etc.

Failure to adequately throw the ball to 2B, failure to keep the ball in front of him.  Granted, not every game was like this.  For the most part he was pretty good last year.  But there were far too many occasions like this.

I almost had a heart attack!

too soon?
