Another mock draft, FG v2.0

https://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/2018-mlb-mock-draft-v-2-0/

17. Los Angeles Angels – Logan Gilbert, RHP, Stetson
We have the Angels mostly on college players here, with Gilbert representing the most consistent rumor but either one of Kowar or Rolison also representing a fit. The club is also on Alabama prep SS Jeremiah Jackson, possibly at this pick. He’s likely off the board by their second selection, though.

No. 17 Los Angeles Angels — Kumar Rocker, RHP, North Oconee (GA) HS

At 6-5 and 250 pounds, Rocker stands out in this year’s draft.  His sheer size allows for easy velocity, as the right hander routinely runs his fastball into the upper-90s with late movement. Beyond his fastball, Rocker also features a power slider that, while inconsistent at times, could develop into a very effective second pitch.

Here's an article with a scouting report on Gilbert:

https://www.minorleagueball.com/2018/4/10/17217324/2018-mlb-draft-scouting-report-logan-gilbert-rhp-stetson

He is now 6-1 on the season with a 2.98 ERA and a 76-to-15 strikeout-to-walk ratio over 54.1 innings. Opponents are hitting just .192 against him. Along with the ERA, both of these numbers are inflated after his last outing. I think it is safe to say that Gilbert’s first three innings were more indicative of the pitcher he is. His ceiling is pretty high in my opinion. He has the looks of a solid No. 2 with four pitches that can all be above average as he develops and uses them more. He should be one of the early college arms off the board in June.

New mock draft up today at Baseball America:

17
3ds_angels87.jpg

Jackson Kowar

FloridaRHP
Notes:

There are still teams and scouts who say they prefer Kowar to his rotation-mate Brady Singer, and the Saturday starter has put up a solid season for the Gators this spring. The Angels figure to be in on pitching, and a number of second-tier college arms figure to start going off the board around this range.

MLB.com's Jonathan Mayo has us taking Santiago HS Shortstop Brice Turang with our first round pick in his latest mock draft.

17. Angels: Brice Turang, SS, Santiago HS, Corona, Calif.

"We're in the middle of a run on high school talent (seven of the past 10 picks), and there's no reason to stop now. Georgia prep right-hander Ethan Hankins is a possibility, but we'll go with a bat this week, in Turang, who provides up-the-middle talent."

I had the pleasure of teaching this lad when he came through our school as an 8th grader. Taught all of his sisters as well.  Great kid, great family.

Not a lot of guys turning down 1st round money since the slot system became available.  And he could easily get paid like a top 10 pick.

this would be the other guy I'd be thrilled to get.
