Speaking of the Mets, david wright will be activated September 25 and play September 29, probably his last MLB game.

"The Mets’ longtime third baseman and captain held a news conference Thursday afternoon to announce that his body will no longer permit him to play baseball. Wright will be activated for the team’s final 2018 homestand, chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon explained, and start at third base Sept. 29. But that’s it.

Wright did not formally retire Thursday, nor will he likely do so anytime soon. The Mets still owe him $27 million across 2019 and 2020, and his remaining on the disabled list will allow the club to recoup most of it from insurance while still paying out the best position player in franchise history. But after this season ends, Wright will be a baseball player only in the technical sense."

It's amazing to me that although he is under contract for 2 more years, he physically can't play the game and still gets paid.  Baseball really needs to go the NFL route contract wise.  He, like Fielder, will be getting paid millions of dollars to do whatever he wants.  He doesn't have to travel with the team or do anything related to the Mets.  Makes zero sense.

The Mets are pros at this. Remember Bobby Bonilla?

Why, yes, they can be.

Are the unions putting the owners out of business? Not that I've heard. Wealth is being shared. No one held a gun to the owner's heads, when they signed these CBAs and contracts.

Baseball is a sanctioned monopoly, after all. Why not spread the wealth among those whose performance is the basis of the attraction?

Jerry Dipoto ‘embarrassed’ by Mariners’ 2nd half, says tough decisions await in offseason

http://sports.mynorthwest.com/519163/jerry-dipoto-embarrassed-by-mariners-2nd-half-says-tough-decisions-await-in-offseason/

...“We were in a position to do special things and we had a group that was playing together in a way that was so energizing for everybody around the team, and we watched it methodically and painfully be pulled apart over the course of these last two months – and it’s gotten worse as we’ve gone,” Dipoto said. “That has to be part of our decision-making heading into ’19, and frankly those are some tough decisions. We’re at a bit of a crossroads in looking at where we are as a club and trying to determine how we get to a championship level, because we’ve taken two steps forward and then three steps back – and that’s on us.”

Particularly disappointing for Dipoto is how the offense stopped producing at about the same time the Oakland Athletics made a push in the standings. The Mariners had a commanding lead for the second American League Wild Card spot in late June over Oakland, but now trail the A’s by 9 ½ games in the playoff race...

Rays last gasp attempt at making the playoffs this weekend. They play the team directly ahead of them;  the Oakland A's. 2-1 A's in the 10th. Khris Davis regains the HR lead.

Looking at the Rays offense, they are truly a throwback to a bygone era in baseball. Next to last in the AL in HRs, but 2nd in OBP, 2nd in avg., 3rd in steals. Third in team ERA.

Good fielding team, too. Lots of young players with speed.

calls are missed all the time. Harper reacted like a little bitch.

Harper did.

But, it is getting tiresome when umps miss balls/strikes as much as Diaz does.

And to be honest, the Laz Diazes, Country Bumpkin Joe West’s, and Angel Hernandez’ don’t do the game any credit as well either, with their attitudes.

I hope MLB players and their union keep this in mind next offseason when they bitch about mediocre players not getting long-term deals
