Can someone evaluate the regression of our pitchers the last year of Mathis and the first year of Ianetta?

The Angels top pitchers all said they preferred Mathis

Ive been saying it for awhile now. It makes no sense he has a job in the bigs with his bat...unless theres something we dont see.

His name has come up from time to time when ive talked to people in the game. And theyve always raved about him. Theres a few other catchers out there on the same camp, where front offices target them for pitch calling and framing. Again, something we as fans wouldnt notice, but pitchers would.

In 2011, the Angels gave up the fewest runs in the Mike Scioscia era with Haren, Santana, Weaver, Tyler Chatwood and Joel Pinero. The majority of the games were caught by Jeff Mathis.

in 2012, despite adding CJ Wilson and Zack Greinke the Angels gave up 66 more runs. Iannetta was the primary catcher.

Leave it to AnaheimBoob to take a thread about Mathis being more than meets the eye and make it about Scioscia.  It is that laser focus of his that allows the rest of us to feel MUCH better about ourselves.

That's what was my memory.  Our pitching just imploded in 2012

Been saying this for a decade now.  Pitching got a lot worse once he left.

mathis put the #1 down for vs Arod in game 2 of the 2009 alcs.  Fuentes would have hit the glove but Arod popped it out over the wall and the rest is history.
