With Cron out of options, basically we’re getting a Cron in the minors for depth.

Exactly, and it's a very savvy move.

There was nothing wrong with Cron, but he was imminently replaceable.  The problem with Cron was he wasn't option-able, and we'd have to keep him on the roster the entire year.  On our team, with Valbuena and Pujols occupying 1B, this made him less than ideal.

Carter fits well, because we can stash him in AAA as long as we need to, and can then call him up later in the season if the situation calls for it.  If Cron still had an option, he'd for sure still be an Angel.

Got to admire Eppler.  Nothing seems to be done impulsively.  It is fun to watch.

Could this mean curtains for Valbuena?

Valbuena isn’t going anywhere.  Valbuena fits the Angels needs much more than Carter, or Cron would have. Not sure why people want LV gone so quickly.  He can play the corners, hits left handed, and gets timely hits.

I don't know if the Angels had a single minor league player top around 15 HRs last year. Even if it doesn't impact the MLB club at all, would be kinda cool to see someone hit more than 20 or gosh, even 30, down on the farm.

Looked further...as much as our farm has improved, our power/HR numbers are embarrassingly low.

At AAA, Cowart led with 12 (Puello hit 13, but only 7 with the Bees).
There were 80 players who hit more home runs, including 5 players on Memphis, 6 on El Paso, and 7 on Houston's Fresno team.
Eight players had 30 or more, Houston's A.J. Reed had the AAA lead with 34.
Rymer Liriano hit 17, so he alone would have led the Angels minor leaguers. Chris Carter hit 9....in 36 games. Safe to say he would have had more than any Angel if he played one more month in AAA.

At AA, Houchins hit 14.
46 more AA players hit more home runs, including 6 on the Dodgers team, one of whom was Jose Miguel Fernandez, who hit 16, which would have again led the Angels.
15 players had 20 or more, with Detroit's Christin Stewart leading with 28.

At A+, Michael Barash and Brendon Sanger each hit 10.
Seth Brown led the way with 30 HRs, and 72 others hit more than either Barash or Sanger.

At A, John Schuknecht led with 10.
77 more players topped that, with Emmanuel Tapia leading the way with 29. Six others hit at least 20.

Way down in Rookie ball, Jeyson Sanchez and Harrison Wenson each hit 13. Only five more were ahead of them! But neither are considered to be much on the prospect front.

Would be great to see Thaiss, Houchins, Rojas start landing in the 15-25 HR range this year, and Herm, Jones, etc. start getting more into the 10-20 HR range.
