Top 5 in all of baseball? Lol, he barely makes my top 5 for 3b. I'll take Arenado, Byrant, and Ramirez all before him. Outside of 3b there's like another 15-20 position players ahead of him as well. A top 5 player doesn't have a career ops of .754 on the road and what happens to his ops when he's not playing half his games in a band box?

Valbuena was a better offensive player on the road last year than Machado.

I'm all for adding one more major piece, but there are a few out there, Harper, Arenado, Donaldson, Longoria, Darvish, Arrieta, Machado, etc.  If we go for one it may take us out of the running for the others.  I'd plan first who we really want to target.  Or just extend Trout instead.

To be fair, Machado's road OPS was over .800 in 2015 and 2016.   There is some up and down with his career road numbers though.

I don't know what Simmons has to do with valuing Machado. He's not ever going to command the type of contract Machado will and no one has or will claim him to be a top 5 player.

Machado has been worth 27.9 WAR so far in his career, and he's 25 years old. He is unquestionably one of the top players in the game. How is this even a debate?

Man, tough crowd. Machado is 25 and has 28 career WAR, which includes a down season last year. Same as Arenado -- who is 26. 1.5 off of Altuve, who is 27.

He's good, very good, and still has upside to grow into.

You just posted his road OPS. That's it. 

His OPS+ is 116 over his career. Better than Jose Ramirez. Arenado has a career 118 OPS+ btw. 

I would say Arenado is the best third baseman in the game overall. Kris Bryant is a close second. But after that? Machado is right there. 

Is he a top 5 position player? I don't think so. I didn't say he was. But he's unquestionably top 15 and probably top 10.

I agree that Machado is too low.  I think it has to do with the fact that he wasn't good this past year.  If I could grab any one player and put him on the Angels it wouldn't be Bryant, it would be Arrenado.

Depends on how you want to rate it. 

Is it based on who you'd want in a lineup for a game tomorrow? Is it based on who you'd want to have over the course of next season? Is it based on who you'd want on your team for the next 4 or 5 years?

Just watched part of the Top Ten (shortstops) on MLB Network. They had Simmons listed fifth.

Earlier today I watched a defensive highlight reel from Machado. It's hard to imagine him playing next to Simmons. There are better 3B bats out there, but considering his D, I think he is first on my list for this team.
