I was reticent about this subject but I might as well tell you guys the truth about the importance of Prostate health. 

Much to your disbelief because of school yard jokes, your balls are not the most important part of the male anatomy to care for. The Prostate is. It is what not only produces seminal fluids but it plays an important role in getting and maintaining and erection. 

My run in with Bladder Cancer last year forced a surgical solution where the Bladder was removed and replaced with a neo Bladder. A very successful and unique surgery that avoids the need for a urinary diversion which includes an external collection bag. 

But this surgery doesn't come without collateral damage. The Bladder and urethra are interconnected to the Prostate and to insure there was no cancer corruption of the Prostate it also was removed for precautionary reasons. After a complex rerouting of the urethra leaving the Prostate creates problems should it later develop cancer. 

So what they call the gold standard for Bladder cancer surgery, whether a neo Bladder or conduit is chosen, the Prostate is removed. Mine was a happy healthy Prostate that went in the trash after a biopsy. 

Ok, so what does that mean? Well, if the surgeon isn't specialized in this surgery there is a high incidence of permanent nerve damage that would prevent ever having a natural erection. Damage that would negate any effects of prescription drugs like Cialis or Viagra. About the only solution is a penile implant. 

I was lucky to have one of the truly gifted surgeons around and went through the cystoprosectomy without nerve damage but this was not verifiable for over four months after recovery. 

That was four months of dormancy that was not actually responding to daily doses of Cialis, a prescription that will cost anywhere from $300-600 a month, about $10-20 a pill. 

That is the killer of Prostate surgery, if the nerves were spared in surgery, you may be on the hook for about $7k a year in prescriptions for what can be less than what you were used to in results. A long recovery period where there are no noticeable results, when you do start to see results erections are not as hard, and they do not last as long.

For myself it took about a year to return to a satisfactory level, still not as before but hell, I was gutted like a fish and survived cancer so no complaints. My wife was able to work with USC medical and convince the insurance company that my daily 5 milligram dosage was part of cancer treatment, not playtime. That reduced the bill from $380 for 30 day supply to $24 for a 90 day supply. Yeah, she's that good. 

A friend of mine went through Prostate cancer surgery three months before mine. He was not as lucky, they did not successfully avoid damaging those two vital nerves and his life is permanently impacted. Others I've spoke with at a Bladder Cancer support group had various levels of success. I've been fortunate. 

Sex after Prostate removal is different. You can achieve orgasm but there is no seminal discharge. Yeah, weird. It's like your dick with a case if the dry heaves, same reaction but nothing coming out. 

So, if ever a doctor dons the rubber glove and asks you to bend over its because you really need this test, you want this test and you want to pass this test. Because you really do not want this surgery.

Inspect of all the fun, I think its a serious issue if the prostate cancer is detected. A few years back, my friend Thomas was also suffering from prostate cancer. Thankfully, he was diagnosed in the initial stages only so it don't take much problem for him to recover soon. His oncologist also suggested him with some reference for Prostate cancer treatment options Long Island with radiation therapy Suffolk, through which he got recovered earlier.
