You know what's better than a platoon?  Having at least a league-average player at a position so you don't have to use two roster spots for one position.

 

I'm so goddamn tired of hearing about potential platoons.

It's annoying in a fantasy sense, and I question its validity in allowing hitters to maintain their "groove" but from a purely statistical standing, they make sense.

More than anything, it's just annoying for fantasy purposes, kinda like the dreaded RBBC. Big it's no use getting angry over. TheA's have been effectively deploying them for years, and Scioscis has always shown an affinity for them. Not going to go away I'm afraid.

Valbuena and Rasmus would be bonafide starters on our team, and it's not unusual to have the platoon at 1B/DH.

 

I get your point, but our platoons seem to be platooning one below-average player with another and hoping one of them is at least decent.

That's the problem with relying on certain stats too much. They don't factor in certain unquantifiable (at least at this point) aspects like you mentioned. Also, you would think that there would be certain players that would be significantly better than other players if they were afforded the extra reps and at bats from not being platooned. Again, you would never be able to find that out based on righty/lefty matchups.

That's fine, but in the case of Nava you can see that a vast majority of his PAs the last 3 years have come against RHPs. This suggests he was used in a similar role to how he will be used here.

Except catorce didn't do that. In 2015 Calhoun played 159 games. In 2014 Calhoun missed five weeks early in the season with an injury, when he came back he played nearly every game. There's plenty of real stuff to annoy you about Scioscia, no reason to make stuff up.
