Is there any hope for Simmons' bat?

Recommended Posts

This may be a bad comparison, and feel free to call me on it. But i feel like simmons is like trading for erstad, but without guys like salmon, glaus and ga around him

Im one of the biggest erstad homers on this board. But there was a thread a few weeks back where a lot on here were hating on him. I see simmons as similar, amazing defense at a defense important position, with a bat that hurts.

Like i said, i could be way off on that, and would welcome arguments the other way. But i still would have preferred to have targeted a lesser SS even next winter (keep aybar this year) while holding on to newcomb. Once we decided to trade newcomb i would have preffered it was to get a 3B or 2B.

Like i said, simmons is going to be fun to watch. But i think it was a bad move, personally.

The way I see it, you could get defensive specialist SS for next to nothing off the scrap heap. Now granted,my hey wouldn't be aka good as Simmons is defensively, but they would be good. I mean the Angels had a wizard of their own in Eric Stamets before trading him away. I just don't see a ton of difference between Simmons and a guy like Stamets. They both play good defense and have trouble hitting.

I'd have kept Aybar and the prospects. He's only going to be 32 next year. Erick still has another 4 years or so of production left in him. If they really wanted to trade Newcomb and Ellis, they could have landed something we actually need, like a front of the rotation starter or a stud LF. Or better yet, we could have kept both and then we'd have the front of the rotation starter we need a year from now and a damn fine 3/4/5 starter in Ellis.

But it's over and fine with now. No use in complaining. Might as well just appreciate what we have, which is a twice in a lifetime defensive SS that might learn how to hit in the next 5 years.

Bought high and sold low?

Aybar's defense at this point isn't in the same stratosphere as Simmons' defense

and why would you want to extend Aybar when he's 33 yrs old?

Something tells me you haven't seen Simmons play much. To give you an idea, the Braves were insisting on either deGrom or Harvey from the Mets for him.

I like that. Fair comparison because Eybar was always above average.

the gap between their play defensively is huge. Defensively, Simmons will be the best ss in team history.

Aybar's defense wasn't that good this past season and isn't in the same league as Simmons. No other SS is and no other defender may dominate their position more than Simmons does. Not sure what you mean by buying high and selling low. Angels just got a SS who is 5 years younger and under contract for 5 more years who will be more valuable than Aybar will be

I mean, Simmons gives this team a SS on a very nice deal for the next 5 years....but this offense was terrible last season and has ltitle to no bats in the minors. If you are going to deal your top prospect, you gotta do it for an impact bat....not a stud defensive SS

I know the team has a lot of young pitching but I don't like this at all. Aybar, Ellis + lower level spect sure, but not Newcomb. Not for a all glove, weak bat SS

The weak ass farm finally has a gem in Newcomb and they immediately ship him off for a defensive SS when the offense couldn't hit for shit

Not a good first impression by the new GM but will wait to see what else they have planned. Still, losing Newcomb for an all glove SS just doesn't look good at all.

I totally redeemed myself later with a clutch doink single!

Here is my official stance on this deal(just so it's there for when this thread inevitably gets bumped months from now)

Love getting Simmons. The team now has a hard position to fill locked up for the next 5 years. Simmons defense is far above any other SS in the league. It's that great. Adding him to the infield will help the entire pitching staff out tremendously

I just do not like the price...mainly giving up Newcomb. If they were going to deal their only real high-end trade chip fro their farm, I'd wish it would have went in a deal that landed this team an impact bat. That's the only thing I don't like in this

If they end up signing somebody like Gordon or Heyward + signing a FA SP....this will start to make a lot more sense.

Man, I was so pissed over that deal. I've already eaten my crow on this one, but good God. In my anger I basically called the greatest defensive shortstop maybe ever to a glorified Eric Stamets, who looks superb....in AAA.

Sean Newcomb, the more I watch, the more I realize he's basically C.J. Wilson with three more ticks on his fastball. This is his fifth year in Major League Baseball and he's made ZERO adjustments. How good Newcomb is right now is how good he was in 2014. I don't know if he'll ever find the plate.

He still looks like a good pitcher and will probably always succeed because of the quality of his offerings. But he may never be the sort of pitcher that goes further than 4-5 innings per outing. I mean his career WHIP is 1.6. He's basically putting two batters on every inning.

Plays with fire all night long just like CJ did.

Wow this was absolute insanity at the time, and even worse now
