So how does it work now that Seattle has caught Oakland? If Oakland loses tomorrow, does the magic number still go down?

Seattle is still a half game behind Oakland.

They are tied in the loss column, which is how the magic number is calculated.

So...Angels win tomorrow and the number is four.

It would still go down one if the Halos win, otherwise it would stay at 5 if Oakland loses and the Halos lose. As it stands now, both Seattle and Oakland can finish 96-66 at best. Halos are already at 92 wins.

it is equated by the difference in losses.  We cannot jump to #3 tomorrow.  Sorry Gene Mauch.

Angels win the number goes down by one (to 4) for the winner of Seattle / Oakland and that team is in second. The looser goes down two games (to 3) in their elimination number.

Angels loose, the number holds (at 5) for the winner of SEA/OAK games and the looser drops one (to 4)

Thanks. That's what I thought. So now Oakland losing games doesn't help the Angels magic number go down.

"Los Angeles wasted a four-RBI performance by Mike Scioscia, who singled and doubled with the bases full. He is 7 for 16 (.438) with 18 RBI in bases-loaded situations this season."

That pales next to his 9th inning game tying HR in the 1988 NLCS at Shea. Without it, there may be no Gibson WS heroics and the Raviners would currently have a 32 year WS title drought.

In case there's any confusion as to the current magic number, please look to the left.  My avatar will guide you.  Just one of many reasons why Downing Rules!

If any further clarification is needed, Miami Vice ran for FIVE (5) seasons.

The best episode of Season 5 was probably either "Hostile Takeover," where Sonny comes out of his amnesiac state as Sonny Burnett, or the extremely violent "Borrasca."
