Who is in the Starting Rotation in 2014: Skaggs or Santiago

Skaggs gets the fifth spot if he dominates in spring training by fixing his mechanics otherwise he goes down to Salt Lake. Santiago goes to the pen, Richards has earned himself a spot in the rotation if you ask me, let him start the year in the rotation. Weaver, Wilson, Garza, Richards, Skaggs, and Santiago as a 6th starter has the potential to be lights out. Pretty young rotation too, CJ's the oldest at 33 which isn't even that old. Weaver's 31, Wilson's 33, Garza just turned 30, Richards is still only 25, Skaggs turned 22 at the end of the year, and Santiago is 26. Good to see some youth

The Angels believe Skaggs has the higher upside but at the moment Santiago is ahead of him on the depth chart.

If Matt Garza showed up today and opening day was tomorrow, with no spring training, Skaggs would start at AAA.

Obviously, a lot will happen between now and the real opening day, not the least of which is 6 weeks of spring training. Because of that, where people line up on Dec 13 is not really relevant, although fun to discuss.

Makes sense. Skaggs definitely has the higher upside, but they can afford to be a bit patient with Santiago in the fold. Best case scenario is Santiago buys some time until Skaggs forces his way into the rotation, and then Santiago shifts back to the pen. Halos creating a good problem to have at SP after this Trumbo trade. Part of the issue was the lack of quality depth last year, and it's obvious they have been working hard to fix that this offseason

If they miss out on Garza and can't get Tanaka, Maholm would probably be the guy I'd want out of the remaining bunch of arms available.
