MLB bans home plate collisions starting in 2014

Yeah because MLB is known for how well they adjust their rules, lol.

If catchers don't want to get plowed into then they shouldn't block the plate.  There are ways to tag a runner out without blocking it.

It is a dumb rule.

A baserunner shouldn't be able to plow into a catcher when the catcher already has the ball.  Smart rule.

Players can't protect their own health?

They are banning something that has been a part of baseball since the beginning that rarely happens and is easily avoidable.

If it's easily avoidable, then why does it happen?

Using your same logic, if it rarely happens, why do you care?  Parts of baseball that were from the beginning........... segregation, bare hands, all day games, no helmets.

They should tape bubble wrap over all the players and give them foam bats. You know... to protect players' health.

Yeah, because preventing potentially career-ending collisions is just the same as wrapping people in bubble wrap.

I bet when you step on a rusty nail you don't get a tetanus shot, because only women do that kind of thing.

He's saying the injuries rarely happen. This will completely change the way runners approach running home. Instead of worrying about touching the plate they're going to be concerned about stepping on the catcher's pinky toe or breaking his nail. It's bullshit.

Just like your argument.  Why should a runner be able to barrel into home plate when he can't do that at any other base?  Why isn't a slide good enough?  If you need to have that manly element, they can slide headfirst.  That's pretty damn manly, risking injury like that.

Because he's blocking the base path.

LOL at your "manly" comments.

I love that people are complaining about the "sissification" of a non-contact sport. The de facto rule at home has always been a dumb exception because it doesn't make sense that a runner can collide with a catcher who has the ball and still end up safe.

By the way, blocking the plate without the ball has always been illegal according to the rulebook but has never been enforced.

Why should there be a different standard at home plate than at second and third? People normally find plays at the plate exciting regardless of a collision or not, because there's a run a stake. Home plate collisions are actually kind of random when you think about the nature of the game, it really doesn't fit. There's no reason to risk injuries at this point.

For people who whine about it pussifying the sport, get real, baseball is a pussy sport. Just look at the amount of physical contact in basketball, hockey, soccer, and football, and baseball can't even compare, so why try? It's different, and that's okay.

You could have made a legitimate argument about home plate being the only base the runner can overrun and still not be out.  Considered from that perspective, there is something to it.  Hopefully, this rule will also address blocking the plate.  That's actually possible, you know.
