Put another "X" on the cops' guns

Recommended Posts

Geoffrey Alpert, a professor of criminology at the University of South Carolina, said officers are typically justified in the use of deadly force when they sincerely believe lives are at stake.

"If it's a pink bubble gum gun and an obvious fake to most, then there is no reason to shoot," he said. "But if the gun looks real the barrel is being pointed at you ... it's unfortunate, but a perceived threat trumps age and the officers have to protect themselves."

How were their lives in danger if the kid had his back to them and was unaware of their presence?  That is ridiculous!

You missed a step. The time of day the school had just let out so there were kids out on the street. The public was in danger and so they had to intervene immediately. If they don't at any moment the suspect could take off running and use the weapon along the way. They did call for back up but they had to be first responders.

Stay back?  Wait for back up?  Use the loudspeaker?

All law enforcement officers are given options when it comes to use of force. Some very low level and lethal as well. We would have to put ourselves at the scene to really understand the reasons the officers chose to do what they did. With that said they may have used extremely poor judgment or may have done what was necessary. There are a lot of really bad youth walking the streets that are capable of horrible things as much as an adult.

It's funny you guys are still arguing with mt...  He makes assumptions and statements based on no knowledge of Police-proceedure.  Then one of us comes-back with a logical fact, and he screams that it has no bearing on the case...

He's arguing like a defense attorney who has no affirmative defense; just muddy the waters with MMQ/second-guessing.

I recently read a script about this story. A total tragedy.

As we can see from this thread, the same kind of people who justified the Geoge Floyd murder were also justifying the murder of Tamir Rice for similar but slightly different reasons.

The officer who killed Tamir had been fired from his previous police department for being mentally unstable. He then went and got a job with Cleveland PD.
