I majored in History and got a teaching credential. I subbed for 2+ years in California and could not get a full time job. I just moved to Washington and couldn't even get a sub job so I work 4.5 hours a day as a paraeducator. Don't major in history there are no jobs

History is a good degree if you're considering a career in education or law. There aren't many teaching jobs right now, true. I started a graduate program for a masters and credential, but ended that nonsense as soon as I realized how miserable teachers were. Passed on law school, but work as an Independent Contractor specialist/Operations and Sales Director for a specialty HR firm. I couldn't ask for a better job or a better employer. But, I really just got lucky.

Last year I got my BS (har har) in Business Management and I'm working on my BA in English.  Both of those are almost worthless but I'm hoping that together they'll activate some sort of Wonder Twins power that gives me a good backup for when my current job disappears.  A man can dream.

Psychology had a lot of good looking girls that weren't complete dumbies

It isn't worth a damn in preparing you for a job, though. I have a BA in psychology that landed me a low paying dead end desk job with a state agency in Oklahoma. In my late 30s I went back to school and earned a nursing degree. Being an RN pays a hell of a lot better than my dime-a-dozen social science degree ever did.

BA Economics from CSUF here...also got an AA in Business Admin from Fullerton College.

I echo previous commenters to stay away from the less practical majors unless you plan to become a teacher.  My friends who majored in Art or Music or Theatre deeply regret this decision.  Those who succeed are the ones with innate talent, not the ones with college degrees.  So anything in the sciences, engineering, health, or business-related is your best bet.

There's a reason I mentioned the AA degree.  The General Education requirements for an AA/AS degree at a community college are virtually identical to what is required by the CSU or UC you plan to attend.  Same for the lower-level classes required by the CSU or UC for your major .  The moral of the story is you can get an AA/AS degree without extra classes in many cases simply by choosing your classes wisely and filing the necessary paperwork before you transfer.

If something prevents you from completing your BA/BS degree, at least you would have an AA/AS degree, and that's a lot better than nothing.  A friend of mine received a promotion after getting his AA degree and his company also subsidized his tuition at CSUF because of it.

I followed a similar path.  VHF left out the best part of being a RN though.......the 3 day work week.  I don't make quite as much as I made in my previous career but I have a LOT more time to enjoy life with the money I do make.  Plus it's pretty interesting and some days I even feel like I made a difference.

I quit construction work when I was 27 and went to a crash course tech school (5 nights a week 5 hours at a time at night for 8 months). I got was equivalent to a BA in computer science and some Microsoft certs. I'm now making 80+ grand a year, paid off my house by the river and beach, and both cars, working for an awesome company, and at one time worked for Microsoft for two years.

If a knucklehead like me can do it, you can do it!
