Where does the Trout $35M number come from?  Both Fangraphs Roster Resource and BB-Ref have it at $37.1M.  The Angels pre-paid a bonus of about $1.6M, but that seems to have been spread over 2 years ('19-'20).

Well, the ~$35M numbers is his AAV. So maybe there's a mix-up?

@Jeff Fletcher How did you come up with those contract numbers for Trout and Rendon in '22?

Both Cots Contracts and Roster Resource say that in 2022, Trout is making $37.117M and Rendon is making $36.571M. (Actual money, not AAV).

I asked the same thing and was told that it's because of signing bonuses that have already been paid.

Ok. I guess the important part is whether or not Arte would consider those bonuses as part of a prior year's payroll number or this year's payroll number.

From what I read, he's usually just concerned with actual payroll expenditures. Not the way it's calculated for the luxury tax, and not the way the opening payroll is. I'd be happy to sign Scherzer to a deal that pays him $35 per season for 3 Seasons, structured over 4, the way that Bauer's is. Plus some deferred money.

If that's still legal after the CBA is renegotiated.

Something like $30M in 2022 / 2023 / 2024 and a $15 M buyout in 2025 or a 35M salary with $15M deferred each year and to be paid in 2029, 2030, 2031. (and 15M of the 35M salary in 2025 also deferred to 2032.

Nearly 1/2 of his last Nationals contract was deferred without interest and paid in a unique way, so the team could continue to operate with a big payroll and he could presumably pay less in taxes.

Halo fans need get off the Scherzer band wagon. He wants to sign with a contender. His price will be jacked up by halos but he will end up with Dodgers. Same story every year, Cole and Bauer. Artie does not go over lux tax so forget about that, no matter what the number will be. Look for halos to get Gray and Gray, Jon and Sunny. Paul De Jong at SS in a trade and rest of money for bullpen. Hopefully Raisel will be one of pen pieces.

Eeyore says hi. Do you really think the Angels don’t consider themselves a contender? Do you really think they can’t put a decent pitch together saying that an ace is the only thing missing? Cmon man let’s be a tiny bit positive.

Also, eight teams have paid the tax in its current iteration, Angels under Arte are one of them.

Also, Paul De Jong sucks. Two terrible years with the bat, lost his job. Great defensively but hasn’t hit well Since his rookie year. We already have one of those guys in David Fletcher. We don’t need two. We need offense and defense.

Halos do not have money for high price SS. Artie went over tax one time. He is big time conservative. Angels may consider themselves a contender but does Scherzer after 6 losing seasons? If it comes down to Dodgers or Angels which team most likely in playoffs next year?

Dodger obviously should be in playoffs as they have two non-contenders in their division plus one maybe. Angels have two maybes and one team full of cheaters plus the Rangers. They also won 106 games. But they had a 260 M payroll and have several very high priority free agents besides Scherzer. But they have a full staff if they bring back Kershaw. Bauer is not going away. They won’t be able to just cut him and he will cost them $40 M. Scherzer on top of that will be a huge tax payment. They have a lot of questions.

And just because you don’t think the Angels will sign a SS, which is legit the only hole in their lineup, if everyone is healthy, just means you shouldn’t be the GM.

With a healthy Trout and Rendon Offense will be fine. Ohtani, Walsh, Adell, Marsh, Fletcher and Stassi. De Jong has some power but halos need his defense.

He was demoted. Rengifo would give you comparable production for no trade assets

Angels will not go into a season with four questionable spots in their lineup. It’s just not gonna happen.

I'm not a dodger fan but they have very few questions. They already have set lineup without Seager or Chris Taylor. Without Scherzer or Kershaw have 2 aces top of rotation. Plus they do not care about lux tax. They raise ticket prices every year so fans pay tax for them. Bauer who knows what will happen.

one of my biggest angel joys at this moment is not seeing albert pujols' stupid name and some ridiculous number next to it. thank god our long national nightmare is over.

Maybe Albert goes straight to Arte's box and doesn't miss a year without a paycheck from him. Not baseball money,  but Arte's been very very good to him. And will be so indefinitely.

We really don't know if this was just a go-for-broke year in a luxury tax cycle strategy.  We will know more when we find out if the new CBA wipes the slate clean or not, and the Dodgers become a year 0 tax offender or if they are subject to 2nd year penalties.  If the tax threshold doesn't go down and this year's tax counts against consecutive year penalties, they could stay under the cap in 2022..
