The Official 2021 Los Angeles Angels Minor League Stats, Reports & Scouting Thread

Recommended Posts

Sometimes, it soaks volumes where they choose to slot players in the batting order, particularly in the minor leagues.

Placencia leading off (good hit tool and prototypical middle infield speed), Alex Ramirez batting second (power and speed), Vera batting third (projectable power from both sides of the plate) batting third, Blakely (tools galore) hitting cleanup.

And with as many athletes, it's fun to look at what position they get to play.  Vera was at SS with Blakely at 2B (he'd be huge for a 2B), Bonilla at 3B and Alex Ramirez in CF.

Most scouts believed Ramirez would start thickening up by now to lose foot speed, instead he's putting on all the right kind of weight.

Natanael Santana is a fun one to watch too.

As a 17 year old in 2019, he had a .778 OPS in the DOSL with good power (5 2B, 5 HR), 12-16 in SB attempts, and 34 BB to 66 K.

That led the team in HR, displayed pretty damn good discipline for that age, and 12 SB in 54 G is impressive too.

This ACL Angels team has a lot of talent.

I'm trying to figure out what they see as Wantz' role in the majors.

Is tonight's outing them really converting him to a starter? He's pitched at least 4.0 innings 3 other times this year.

They've really had him starting all year and he missed three weeks in there so they have been ramping him back up in his last four appearances.  Two of which were in relief.  So overall it's 5 starts and 3 relief appearances.  All sorta mixed together but only one of his appearances last less than 2.1ip.

Might as well just keep him starting

Ugly pitching at AZL. From the boxscore, it looks like Gabriel Tapia gave up four walks and a hit, was taken out without recording an out, then Van Scyoc walked three more and gave up a hit, granting Tapia 5 earned runs. Ouch.

There was a weird ass glitch where for 10 minutes, they gave all those runs to the Angels in the top of the 1st so they had 8 scored.

Daniel gave up 3 solo hrs.  75 strikes over 98 pitches.  Glad to see they are trying to get guys to throw strikes and not dance around the zone.

Not sure where the org actually stands on this, but I think it's a very underrated part of a pitchers development to be able to throw all their pitches for strikes.  In any count.  Fastball command can be elusive at times to young players and being able to get back into count with off speed stuff is important in my opinion.  I've always like the idea of pitching backward where your fastball is somewhat of the off speed pitch.  Especially now with the trend of elevating the fastball as an out pitch.

I think it's all that much more important when you don't actually have a plus fastball.  I think it's actually been very helpful for guys like Suarez and Sandoval who actually have good fastballs but spotty command.  They can use their secondary pitches to get back into counts and aren't as predictable in conventional fastball counts.

it was about 3.1 before today and I've got him at about 3.4 after.  his xFIP before the game was 2.61 and that actually probably went down because it assumes an avg number of hrs.

will be interesting to see if he stays a bit hr prone at times because of his propensity to throw a ton of strikes.

After his last start Fangraphs has Detmers' FIP at 3.41 and xFIP at 2.27
