North Korea tests more missiles in January than all of 2021, including most powerful one in years

North Korea has completed more missile tests in the first month of 2022 than it did in the entirety of 2021, alarming South Korean officials who worry about its northern neighbor's intentions.

The hermit kingdom completed its seventh weapons test this month with the launch of the Hwasong-17, which Japanese Defense Minister Nobuo Kishi described as the longest-range missile it launched since the test of the Hwasong-15 in November 2017.

The missile traveled just short of 500 miles at an altitude of over 1,200 miles before landing in the sea.

DANGEROUS ESCALATION: North Korea launches more than a dozen missiles, South Korea returns fire

North Korea fired more than 20 missiles on Wednesday in the direction of South Korea, and at least one landed near the rivals’ tense sea border.

South Korea retaliated by firing its own test missiles, sending some citizens to evacuate in underground shelters.

This is the most missiles North Korea has ever fired in one day and the first time a short-range ballistic missile has landed near South Korea's territory since 1945, when the peninsula was divided.

'MERCILESSLY' STRIKE:North Korea says missile tests were practice for hitting US targets

North Korean military officials confirmed on Monday that their recent missile tests were intended as practice to "mercilessly" strike South Korean and American targets, as the East Asian country signals intent to attack military bases and operation command systems.

The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) escalated geopolitical tensions by firing dozens of missiles towards the sea last week in defiance of recent U.S.-South Korean air force drills. The DPRK's missile tests triggered evacuations in some Japanese and South Korean areas.

"The recent corresponding military operations by the Korean People’s Army are a clear answer of (North Korea) that the more persistently the enemies’ provocative military moves continue, the more thoroughly and mercilessly the KPA will counter them," the General Staff of North Korea’s military said in a statement carried by state media.

North Korea test launches missile capable of striking anywhere in US

North Korea test-launched an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) capable of carrying a nuclear warhead with a range that could strike anywhere across the U.S.'s mainland, defense officials said Friday.

The missile landed 130 miles off the coast of Japan, and the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command said it was in close communication with Japanese and South Korean officials.

The U.S. command immediately condemned Pyongyang’s missile launched and called on it to "refrain from any further unlawful and destabilizing acts."

North Korea infant jailed for life after parents found with Bible according to recent report

Christians in North Korea are considered the lowest in society, the report noted

A two-year-old along with his entire family were sentenced to political life imprisonment after North Korean officials found a Bible in their possession, the US State Department’s International Religious Freedom Report 2022 found, documenting the regime’s crackdown on people having religious beliefs.

The report provided estimated figures on religious persecution, stating that approximately 70,000 Christians, as well as individuals from other faiths, are imprisoned in North Korea.

"The right to freedom of thought, conscience, and religion [in the DPRK] also continues to be denied, with no alternative belief systems tolerated by the authorities," António Guterres, the United Nationa's (U.N) secretary-general said in the report outlining liberty religious atrocities that have occurred in North Korea in the past years.
