This is exactly what was expected. Maddon interviewed, as well a few other guys, one of which will be a minority, then Maddon will be hired.

Interviewing Farrell and Showalter  is simply the Angels covering their bases should Maddon choose to go elsewhere.

None of it changes the fact that the Angels are Maddon's first choice and Maddon is the Angels first choice.

If I'm these other managers why bother interviewing/coming to Anaheim?  To go to Disneyland afterwards?

They came for the free lunch at The Winery Restaurant.

1.to show teams you are serious about managing again

2. to learn more about an organization

3. perhaps the team will decide you would be a good fit in a different capacity

there are numerous reasons.

According to Boob Nightengale the fourth guy is one without prior managerial experience. So, apparently no Girardi? Bizarre. Either Eppler thinks he’s worse than Farrell and Showalter (can’t see that), or he’s not interested in managing the Angels.

He wants to manage the Cubs

Most of MLB seems to be pivoting to young and hungry managers, and it has brought them a lot of success.

And then there are the Angels, who still want old and out of touch. Go figure.

It’s okay if it’s Maddon - he’s older, but like Francona he has a history of being relatively progressive for a veteran manager. Honestly, having a hybrid between analytics and old school isn’t the worst, as long as the old school stuff isn’t stupid (like leaving your closer on the bench because “it isn’t a closing situation”). Farrell and Showalter aren’t all that great, though. I’ll be heavily concerned about 2020 if somehow we end up with one of them.
