Ausmus is not very good regardless of his record.

Blaming players only magnifies a coach's inability to put players in a position to succeed.  Simply look at the numbers related to Angel pitching when the count is in favor of the pitcher.

Bob Melvin has consistently done more with lesser players than any other manager currently employed.  The Angels may not have had the personnel to win a division or sniff a wildcard but being consistently steamrolled towards the end of the season should raise some questions regarding the coaching staff.  The Angels are not even competitive at this point.  The Angels have become the Orioles in less than a year.

This from Halos Nation

Why?

Their line-up has consisted of Taylor Ward, Jared Walsh, Michael Hermosillo, Matt Thaiss, Anthony Bemboom, Justin Bour, and Kaleb Cowart almost every game while starting five starters, AAAA SPs, and guys clearly not ready all while playing what has been one of the hardest 2nd halves in baseball in terms of strength of schedule.  We just played 100+ win Houston at home and took 1 out of 3, with two of the games competitive.  The Astros are trying to win in an effort to secure homefield from a Yankees team pressing them and they couldn't even sweep a team starting 60% AAAA flotsam.

Regardless, I don't know how you judge Ausmus one way or the other based on this season alone.  Maybe he truly sucks, I don't know...how can you distinguish his excellence or awfulness either way based on what he has had to work with to this point?

How often is a manager fired after only one year? Ausmus is Eppler's guy.

True

It has happened before here, though.    Del Rice only managed for one season in 1972.   Victor Rojas' dad Cookie only managed for 8 games short of one season in 1988.

Granted, it's not the greatest habit to continue.

Why talk about September? We started the season 1-6. We lost on opening day and we got our ass’s kicked in our home opener. Ausmus didn’t have this team prepared to compete from day one. That was before injuries and AIDS (courtesy of tdawg) set in.

Yep he’s been a total disaster

His 2018 "playoffs" was a one-loss wild card to a 91 win Rockies team that immediately got shit-hammered by the Brewers.  If that happened to the Angels, people here would be calling for the manager's/front office's heads.  This year, he'll have 4 starters that will give him 30 starts, a roster with 9 hitters at 100 OPS+ or better, 6th best BP in all of baseball but his run differential pegs him at 89 wins while he's 82.

Don't labor under the delusion that people would not be losing their damn minds here....

Cubs are 7 games off their Pythag record, which is exactly the same number of games they are behind the Cards..

And since some people still think stuff like this is gobbledygook ...  Check out the AL West this year..

Houston -- Actual, 102-54 - Pythag, 102-54
Oakland -- Actual, 94-62 - Pythag, 94-62
Texas -- Actual, 75-81 - Pythag, 72-84
Angels -- Actual, 70-86 - Pythag, 70-86
Seattle -- Actual, 66-90 - Pythag, 67-89

It's almost like run differential really does matter

PS..  Also,  GDI, I was making the same point and went looking for the AL West Pythag when you posted! lol..

Bob Melvin may be the most underrated manager in MLB?      If the A's stop paying him well enough, it would be nice if the Halos could swoop in.

People dismiss the A's all the time even when projection systems have them being competitive..

For all the blathering about the Angels missteps and how MS was a dinosaur Angels fans tend to fawn all over brand name players and always disregard the A's as a result...

Bunch of dinosaur fans.

So the Cubs fans want answers while Angels fans want more Mike Trout bobbleheads.

Absolutely would be an upgrade to Ausmus. I've always been a huge fan of Joe Madden and I actually think the Cubs would be making a mistake letting him go if it happens.

Late season collapses two years in a row has pretty much sealed his fate. It won’t cost the Cubs anything since his contract is up.

If the Angels are to make a change then I would prefer someone like Torey Luvello, if they can pry him away from Arizona.

our opening day starter was Trevor Cahill.

the lineup had Justin Bour batting 3rd, Simmons hitting 4th, Cozart hitting 6th, Lucroy batting 8th, and Bourjos 9th.

on day 3 of the season, Felix Pena started and Cozart was our leadoff hitter.  Bourjos and Bour were also in the lineup again.

on day 4, our 3, 4, 5 hitters were Bour, Simmons, and Cozart.  Bourjos was also in the lineup.

on day 5, it was Chris Stratton toeing the mound who proceeded to give up 4 runs in the first.

on day 6, Cozart lead off again and Lucroy hit 5th.  Kevin Smith was the DH and Bourjos in LF with Cahill on the mound and Garcia was asked to keep the game tied in the 8th.

on day 7 matt Harvey gave up 8 runs on 10 hits in 4 innings.  Bour, Cozart, Lucroy and Bourjos all played.

but yeah.  it was a lack of preparation.

Didnt have his team prepared because they started slow?

The offense the first week was a ghost.

If thats ausmus' fault, he should get an extension for whqt the offense did right after that. His work with lastella and goodwin alone was hall of fame. Not to mention trout had his best season ever.

Nice coaching, skip!
