2020 rotation:  Canning, Heaney, Ohtani, Suarez, Pena, and Sandoval (6 man rotation to limit innings)?

Assuming that the FA pitchers are all either waaaay too expensive or overrated?

Pena is really good normally for 4-5 innings, just needs to stretch it out another inning or so.

Skaggs needs to be traded.

So why does Skaggs need to be traded but not Heaney?

And so it begins....

Quietly, the Angels farm system has produced Jaime Barria, Griffin Canning and Jose Suarez just in the last year alone.  You could even make an argument that they've produced Felix Pena the SP as well.

But the very best thing about this promotion is that for the rest of 2019, the Angels get an opportunity to host an open tryout for SP spots in 2020.  You have to figure that they'll limit Ohtani's innings by having him only pitch once a week.  So that opens up the opportunity for 1/3 of a starting spot, basically someone to function as a reliever and part time starter or someone to make periodic trips between Salt Lake and Anaheim.  We know Harvey and Cahill are gone, so there's two more spots.  And right now the onus is on Heaney and Skaggs to show they can be healthy and productive.  Shoot, there's even some pressure on Felix Pena to keep his spot and not be transitioned to relief.

But from where I'm standing right now, there will probably be three openings in the rotation next year, if we're going to roll with a 6 man rotation.  1. Ohtani 2. Canning 3. Pena.

For those last three spots, it basically will be a tryout between Heaney, Skaggs, Suarez and Barria.  Now if the Angels sign a free agent, like i think they will, then you're looking at two spots available between those four.  I'd love to see something like Cole, Ohtani, Canning, Suarez, Heaney and Pena.

I'm a little nervous about him coming up so soon...he kinda seems like he could use some more time in AAA. If I remember right, he started off really well there, but his ERA is now close to 4 - sounds like he's been shelled recently there...

I thought I read he had a sub 2 ERA and then had one bad outing his last time out.

That's entirely possible - its harder to find game by game stats for the minors. I always forget what website has them...That's less concerning. Also, it IS our AAA team, so presumably he's been pitching in a hitter friendly environment.
