Any chance the Angels will sign Keuchel after the draft?

Recommended Posts

Obviously we would want to wait it out until after the draft in order to not lose the pick.  I know that will bring the team over the luxury tax threshold but he could be the piece to bring us close to a playoff spot.  Starting pitching is obviously the weakest spot on the team and it would be an obvious improvement over what is currently out there.   Would Arte open his paycheck to improve the team?

Considering how many free agents we were in on/finalists for, but didn’t get, it makes me think Eppler isn’t willing to outbid other teams on premier free agents.  I don’t see that changing with Keuchel, unless he finally woke up and realized the rotation is unacceptable

Keuchel is hardly a premiere free agent.  He is a 31 year old who has a declining skillset and had one of the highest hits per 9 innings in the majors last year.   Calling him a premiere free agent would be similar to calling Gio Gonzales a premium free agent, who happened to sign a minor league deal.

They have until June to see if Heaney is OK to continue this year or if he needs more IL time.  I think if he goes down again, you'd have to at least look at what it would cost to bring him in.  Skaggs is coming off an injury, Cahill and Harvey are replaceable, and Pena, Stratton, Barria and Canning are not 100+ pitch workhorses.  If you can get him on a 3 year deal that won't cost you a draft pick, you'd have to look at it.

His ERA since 2016 is close to 4.00, with his WHIP around 1.25.  That cries out 1 year or 2 year deal.

It would almost make sense for him to only sign a one year deal in hopes of doing really well and getting one last chance at a big contact next off-season.

I’m sure it’s a lot of Boras posturing with the draft about a month away, but Kuechel seems like he’s sticking to his demands.

Wow.  Well, any team that gives him the value he thinks he is worth is insane.
