You’re correct.  If we got him via trade and he then left in FA we would not receive any draft compensation. 

If he does end up getting traded though.  Whoever signs him won’t have to give up a pick.

I'd be fine with Eppler trading some top prospects for a controllable ace SP or multiple controllable projectably dominant bullpen assets, but that's about it. 

Doesn't make sense for a rental no matter how good they are, and doesn't make much sense in the OF with who we already have and who is coming, and doesn't make much sense in the IF with the number of prospects we have right in this moment to trot out there and assess.

Why would we waste top prospects on him when we aren't not going to compete this year anyway? That seems just pointless and irresponsible when we could sign him in the off season if we really wanted to.

DeGrom's only thrown 807 MLB regular season/post-season innings so far.   Since being called up for good in May 2014, he's only had one solid DL stint of about a quarter of a season in 2016.   Otherwise, he's been pretty durable.   That plus 2.5 seasons to FA = taking a boat load of talent to acquire him.
