Rainbow vacuum

Recommended Posts

So, we had a sales person come to our place the other night to demo some kind of product (wife volunteered since we got a free humidifier thing out of sitting through it). I had no idea what this guy was going to try to sell me when he pulls out this big 50 year old looking canister thing. We were joking at first that he was your old school door to door vacuum cleaner salesperson, a la Kirby vacuums.

Turns out he is selling a vacuum cleaner/air purifier hybrid. The way it works is there is a water pan on the bottom of this canister that you fill up with water from your sink, and instead of all the dirt/dust getting caught in a traditional filter, the hose leads into the water (which when the motor is on is basically a big whirlpool), and some kind of "seperator" device keeps water from blowing out through the exhaust. It's actually a genius design because there are no filters to wear out/clog (except for just one HEPA filter at the exhaust), so your airflow/suction will never decrease over time.

I went over the same spot on my carpet something like 15 times with my new vacuum, and then tried the Rainbow and it picked up enough to turn the water pan into mud basically after about 2 or 3 passes. The cleaning power is actually incredible, and blew my mind.

The negative is that it's a little awkward/bulky to use, and you have to keep up with dumping the water down the toilet after it gets sufficiently nasty. Oh, and it retails for over $3,000. Now, I would never even consider paying that amount for a damn vacuum, but I looked on craigslist after he was done and found a couple for around $500 with all the tools and what looked to be good condition, so I sprung for it. I looked them up and the company has been around since the '30s, and a lot of people say these things last for decades with proper maintenance. A big part of me feels weird spending that much money on a cleaning tool, but our family has a lot of allergies, so maybe this will help.

Years ago my brother was home alone during the week while the Angels were playing a day game against the Rangers. He was high when some black dude knocked at the door. He answered and the guy says he's going door to door selling vacuums. My bro lets him in to do a demo because the Angels were down a bunch, he was high and presumably not racist. The dude is showing my brother how the vacuum works and the Angels mount a late rally. He tells the guy - if the Angels win I'll buy it. So, he and the black dude watch the rest of the game and the Angels won. He financed the $2000 vacuum (no clue how he got approved). My mom still uses it to this day.
