Red Sox dump Farrell as manager

He's won a world series, and been to the playoffs the last two years.  Won the AL East this year.  Not good enough.

Yet, in Anaheim, its like groundhog day every year.  Boring team, no playoffs, one great player, lots of excuses, and a manager who has been coasting for 20 years.  And three million fans, don't forget that.

It happened this year, last year, and it will happen next year.

So what you are saying is the Red Sox and their roster is nothing like the Angels so the expectations were greater?

Scioscia gets NO pass on the condition of the roster when he has positioned himself to be highly influential in putting the team together rather than just making out lineups and deciding when to bunt.

No pass.  No way.  You make your bed, you sleep in it.

There are days when I wake up and say," Sosh is doing a great job of managing the team." But there are days when I wake up and say," You know, Sosh should be fired because he put so and so in this situation even when we know not to." Surprised the team didn't fired Sosh in either 2012, 2013, or 2014.

Farrell inherited a mess from Bobby Valentine, and then was the trade with the Dodgers, after which he won a World Series.  I have no idea if his extramarital affair, subsequent divorce, and remarriage affected his work in the dugout.

I don’t know what impact the arrival of Dombrowski might have had. I thought Detroit let him go a few years ago when he gave up on the season and traded away Price.  Maybe he wants his own man as Red Sox manager.

Frankly, I think Price and Sale let the Red Sox down late in the season and postseason (Price largely due to injury) and not Farrell and don’t think he should have been fired.

I kind of think that if we can get a well-oiled machine here in 2019 Scioscia couldn’t do as much with it as an EXCELLENT manager closer in age to the players.

Its no different every year for the Angels.  The Angels have a set of objectives to start the year, and the organization meets them.

The objectives, in no particular order, are:

  • Have some bobblehead nights
  • Celebrate Pujols passing some old or dead guys on some all-time lists
  • Watch Trout be great
  • Announce that there were 3,000,000 fans
  • Cash the Fox Sports West and MLB revenue sharing checks

Arte looks over the list the day after the season ends, see that all the boxes have been checked, calls Scioscia to congratulate him on another year, then calls the guy to put Christmas decorations on the yacht.

Then we'll go through the same thing next year.

What you’re saying is that the Angels have worn themselves into a rut and they need to get themselves out of it.  That’s what I’m saying too.

Not sure if you follow the Sox, but they have had a pretty consistent run of clubhouse issues in recent years.  Not sure how much of the clubhouse BS falls on him given the beer and fried chicken issues that preceded him, but it's been a pretty constant issue during his tenure and FWIW, it's been said the Sox were ready to can him after back to back last place finishes in 2015 but that his cancer diagnosis prevented it from happening.  The team didn't want to appear heartless after all the flak Lackey got for divorcing his wife during her battle with cancer.

All that being said, MS wouldn't have lasted this long in Boston, or NYC.   That's just reality.

Scioscia's influence on the roster makeup was pretty much nil after 2011.  The man wanted more pitching the offseason we signed AP -- and it was widely celebrated on this site that he had no clue that the AP deal was forthcoming.  Blame him for the Naps deal, but the rest of the shit that has happened since then was the work of the smartest guy in the room.

Sox did the same thing with Tito

they're not of afraid of change

Sosh winning 98 games in 2014 and being swept in the ALDS bought him another 4 seasons

The 10 year contract was no doubt a factor too.

Tito was victim to the Beer and Fried Chicken..   Clubhouse shit always seems to be the downfall of Boston managers.   I think the last guy to get fired cause of actual baseball stuff was Grady Little and his great offense was trusting Pedro Martinez to finish an inning.  Valentine, Francona and now Farrell seem to have been due to clubhouse issues.

The ten year deal with MS was a mistake.   Even a 5 year deal was unheard of for a manager, ten years was a trip.

And how was he going to do that? By teaching Trout not to slide thumb first?

He could have coached Trout into being a better leader.

He also could have flip flopped when he used Middleton and Bedrosian.  Wrong every time !

the issues combined probably cost the Angels 7 wins.
