Honestly this is encouraging, as well as Scioscia's comments the other day identifying the offense as the problem.

The Angels scored 710 runs and allowed 709, which given all the injuries on the staff was pretty decent. No one is touching Cleveland at 564 runs allowed, that is the most dominant year I've ever seen. I can't remember seeing one lower, especially in the AL. Cleveland also scored 818 runs.

That being said, while the Astros gave up a few less runs (-9), they also scored 186 more runs, which is why offense is clearly the deficit.

The Angels had the second best pitching staff in the division, Seattle allowed 63 more runs Texas 107, and Oakland 117. But all four teams scored more than the Angels, which seems like it can't be true the way the Angels offense was clicking at times in August.

Oakland scored 29 more runs, Seattle 40, Texas 89, and Houston again scored 196 more. In fact, The Angels scored only 17 more runs than the lowest team in the AL, the Blue Jays, and without Upton, they likely would have finished last.

The Yankees allowed 50 runs less and the Red Sox 40. Yankees scored 148 More and Boston scored 75 more,

OFFENSE is CLEARLY the PROBLEM.

Angels scored 142 more runs in 2002 than they did in 2017

maybe walks isn’t the answer ... hard to debate facts when the Astros were the highest scoring team and 20th in walks this season

In 2002 they had 5 guys in the lineup with an .800 or better OPS. They could hit.
