Prosecutors asked the judge for a four-year sentence on the auto theft conviction in 2014, but the judge gave him only two. If anyone is to blame, it's him. They argued that he was a hardcore gang member who was previously convicted of armed robbery, and deserved the maximum time. The judge didn't see it that way.

I believe the probation violations, of which there were several since 2016, could have gotten him another year in prison, but with the realignment they kick these back to the county, and there's no more room in the jails. It's seriously messed up, and unless we build more jails and prisons it's not likely to improve any time soon.

I hate to break it to you, but that usually is the case for probation violations (depending on the severity of the violation, of course)

Most violations are for things like not reporting when you're supposed to, not attending court-ordered classes, being somewhere you're not supposed to be, not paying your fine, not securing employment, not living where you listed on your court release papers ( or not reporting that you changed address), etc.

What usually happens is when a person gets in front of the judge, he makes some bs excuse and the judge tells him not to do that anymore and releases him.

It's important to remember there's a big difference between a probation violation and violating parole.

I work in Probation and am totally familiar with the process :). I work with juveniles and it's a bit different on their end

Quick question, to play devil's advocate... you say blame the judge, be he didn't pull the trigger. Is this not giving a pass, of sorts, to the shooter? It sounds awfully similar to those on the left assigning blame to gun manufacturers, rather than the criminals that commit the crime.

first and foremost, this jerk is responsible for his own actions. but you can also see failures in the system and from the judge in letting this guy out when they did. the system needs some tweaking.

There are plenty of tweakers in the criminal justice system.

In 1994 when CA voters passed prop 187 (later deemed unconstitutional by a federal court) it was estimated then that there were 1.3M illegal immigrants in the state costing taxpayers about 3B a year.  The most recent estimate of those numbers are now 2.9M illegal immigrants costing taxpayers over 25B a year.  The state and some cities thumbed their noses when the feds wanted to crack down on sanctuary cities but had no problems asking for fed help when the Oroville dam led to evacuation orders.  Nothing would surprise me at this point when it comes to how this state operates.

Cohen-Sandler said she had counted on a middle-class scholarship for Rose’s education. But even with that $3,000 scholarship, $4,000 from their college savings plan, $5,500 in loans and the $5,000 they believe they can spare from their paychecks, she said, the family still would be short nearly half the money needed for a year at UC.

Higher education costs are absolutely insane.

And what's nuts is that it passed in every county south of the Bay Area.

And what's nuttier is that thousands of Mexican girls born that year are now grandmothers.  How time flies...

You almost got it right with the racial stereotyping but you see, 20 years is a reasonable time gap for a generation to pass from mother to grandmother. Now had you said great grandmother, then you would have nailed it. You need to work on your shtick.

They certainly are. However, tuition and fees at a UC school isn't $34,000/yr
