Should Ichiro's hits in the NBL (Japan) count towards the all time hit record?

Recommended Posts

Ichiro is only 4 hits away from Rose's all time hits record. That being said, should his hits in the Nippon Baseball League count towards the all time record?

My cousin and I were talking about this and he made a good point: Ichiro should be called the all time Hit King, but not the record holder due to the hits being from a different league.

I can't believe people actually think hits that Ichiro got somewhere else should count in MLB.

Do Rose's hits in the minors and high school count..should they?

This is nonsense.

btw..Ichiro is a great player and a certain HOFer and it would have been interesting if he had played his entire career in MLB, but he didn't.

I'm no genius but Id say Japanese baseball is a tad bit more competitive than high school and the minor leagues.

^How on earth can you say that about Ichiro? Am I missing a joke somewhere?

This is what he said when asked about the record: "I would be happy if people covered it or wrote about it,’’ Suzuki told USA TODAY Sports, “but I really would not care if it wasn’t a big deal. To be quite honest, I’m just going out and doing what I do. What I care about is my teammates and people close to me celebrating it together, that’s what’s most important to me.’’

It's a shame he wasn't in the MLB longer. Class act, humble, approached each at bat just looking for a hit, had speed, a glove and a CANNON for an arm. The Angels no doubt would have been a much better team with Ichiro on their team.

But in no way should his hits beside the MLB count. It opens up too many other scenarios.

But it's not as competitive as the major leagues, which is where everyone's hitting stats are coming from.

When players can no longer hookup with a team in MLB, they have gone to Japan to find work. Some players in Japan are so good that they have been able to make the transition to the ML. Mostly they are pitchers but there are a few, such as Ichiro Suzuki that are exceptional position players in the ML.

No doubt he will be a HOF player but unless he plays until he is 50+ years old he will never break Rose's hit record.
