The debt limit does not authorize new spending commitments. It simply allows the government to finance existing legal obligations that Congresses and presidents of both parties have made in the past.

There is a thing called leverage. While it would be better if the debt ceiling was truly viewed independently by politicians the reality is it’s not. Politicians use every tool in the bag to gain payoffs for their donors and constituents. Just take the budget for example. There is no reason to every have a major shutdown. Each line item can be approved individually so ultimately there isn’t a disagreement on a lot of basic issues. Politicians limp it all together hoping to inflict enough pain on the American people they will apply pressure on their side to concede.

The dems can pass everything through reconciliation just like they did with Obamacare. Why haven’t they done so? Who is holding out based on their disagreement over money already spent ? The fight is over future borrowing which is directly linked to future spending. Yes they require separate votes but these votes aren’t in a vacuum. The reps are holding out to politically try and pin the massive spending on the dems. The dems don’t have the 50 votes for reconciliation because holdouts are seeking to fund their pet projects.

This is correct. Not because they disagree with the spending and didn't contribute to it. It's so they can go on Fox News with a talking point to help with mid term votes. Nothing more.

I don’t disagree. The reps can’t stop it so it’s all posturing on their part. It’s also posturing by the dems to suggest reps are blocking anything. Dems  have the numbers and procedures to do whatever they want.
