I just googled it and over 2 million people live on the Canary Islands. I was surprised. I thought it was one of those remote tropical places where only a handful thousand of rich people lived.

Looking at the Googs, La Palma where the volcano erupted has a population of 84k.  Size of La Palma is 273 square miles.  Which is about the size of Molokai Hawaiian Island at 260 square miles.  In more relatable comparison, Catalina island is 76 square miles.  So I think the handful of rich people is probably still applicable.

Yeah I see this a lot online when certain successful bands donate to charity. 

They don't have millions of dollars just sitting in their checking account where they can bang out a $500,000 check all William H Nilly. Most of their assets aren't liquid. They'd be fucking stupid if they were.
