I'm a detail guy so I tend to read actual words and not try to decipher intent. The only mention of slaves in the 14th amendment is to say that the government would not pay losses to former slave owners. Why did people write the 14th amendment? Was it for marriage? This isn't speculation. People actually said why.

What stats are needed? People argued for the ammendment after the Civil War and their arguments weren't based on two dudes marrying. The other slavery ammendment said that people born in the US are automatically citizens. It was intended to ensure that slaves weren't denied citizenship.

Kentucky clerk is still refusing to issue marriage licenses to same sex couples, citing that she is "standing for God."

 

In related news, this same clerk is currently on her fourth marriage.
