Orange County Register: Angels' VP of marketing and ticket sales Robert Alvarado resigns

Recommended Posts

Blaming VP of marketing for lower attendance with the product the team is putting out on the field is like blaming teachers for the low performance on tests that have no consequence for them. If the team were winning, it would be a different story.

Team won 98 games last year and still didn't come close to previous years.  Price increases in recent years has more to do with attendance numbers than this team being a .500 team right now.

Coming off a season where they had the best record in the MLB the Angels should've had many more tickets sold before the season started.  They didn't because of the direction Alvarado went with the Angels ticketing.  He was the VP of marketing AND ticket sales.

I completely agree.  If this is the direction the team wants to go, fine, but don't talk about it outside of the organization.

I don't really disagree, but his comments came off like he was at a party and someone asked him about his job an he was really eager to talk about it. Unfortunately you need to be careful with the press. You can't speak to them like you might talk to just about anyone else.

This. No matter how much one likes a member of the press, you always need to be careful about what you say to them, and you certainly shouldn't confide in them as you might do with a friend.

Having said that, perhaps the comments in the press were only one of many things that led to this guy's resignation. Attendance IS down, and he might have been the fall guy for that regardless if it were really his fault.

totally disagree. the angels have played less than 70 games and they're way off pace, and they have been since the beginning of the season. they had a successful year last year, albeit a quick playoff exit. marketing and ticket pricing are playing a huge factor in attendance. as far as the dude's comments, you don't say we don't care about poor people's dollars because they really don't have the money to spend. no matter what words you choose. it's suicide.

"We're not too concerned, we are still making money. Folks in the less expensive seats spend less and those are the seats that aren't selling".

What an awful, terrible human being.

How is that awful? There are the same cheap tickets available just like in years past. It's not like the Angels are preventing discount shoppers from buying tickets. He was asked if there was concern about revenue since attendance is down. He gave a reasonable explanation of why revenue hasn't taken the same dip as ticket sales.

im not arguing with you, but please explain. Are the tickets more expensive this season? (If they are i havent noticed)

To echo a point dave saltzer made, this is what i was getting at in terms of sosh in another thread. People complain that he gives PC answers to the media. Its smart. Yes he should kick asses in the clubhouse when needed, but theres ZERO reason to call anyone out to the media.

Look at how big of a deal the hamilton comments created....and what really was said that was out of line? "We thought relapsing would be a violation, because we had it written in the contract"...not exactly hate mongering

They were to start the season...they have adjusted prices down since the drop in attendance.  It worked well for this last series.

I heard a report that the real reason this guy was fired was that Arte has seen Calzone, Hamiltown and Matsuiland.

He was patiently waiting for Moreno Valley in RF. thanks Claude, cost this poor bastard his job.

When we closed Matsuiland all of the Japanese fans left.

When we closed Toriitown all of the black fans left.

When we closed Hamiltown all of the crack heads left.

So we have very few fans now.  :P
