Angels call up Carlos Perez

Recommended Posts

yup - Drew can thank Iannetta's unbelievable suckiness for being out of a job now. Butera actually performed pretty much like any reasonable person would expect, it's just Iannetta has been so god-awful. Tough break.

Completely agree. I think the move is the right one but it's rare that a backup gets penalized rather than has the opportunity to take advantage of the starter's ineptitude.

I agree that Ianetta's struggles have everything to do with this - the other options would have been to put Ianetta on the DL (and I'm actually a little surprised they didn't) or DFA Ianetta (and they probably were not going to do that to a team veteran a month into the season). However, Butera's got a .190 ERA right now and hasn't really been a defensive wizard, AND he's the newbie so he didn't have proven past success with the Angels to look at, as Ianetta does...so he really hasn't been doing much to cement his spot on the team. Even if Ianetta had been batting .300, with Perez doing so well in SLC, it might have just been a matter of time before this happened.

That's a pretty solid ERA for a catcher.

Not next to what other catchers are hitting thus far this season. And when you've got another catcher who seems as though they might be capable of hitting much higher than that, and the offense is struggling, it makes sense to switch.

Wally, he batted .190 with no walks, created an error and allowed 8 runners to steal on him in 7 games. He earned his own demotion.

Maybe you're right. Butera's a poor man's Mathis but the guess here is that if Iannetta's OBP was hovering around .375 then Drew is having a seat in the dugout and Perez would still be in SLC. At least for a little while longer.

That "error"  was on a throw that hit Pujols in the glove. His poor average you pointed out is twice as good as CI. Butera was here to be a good defensive back up catcher. CI is playing so horrific that we need our back up catcher to be more than a defensive specialist.

I agree, so why are you defending Butera? That's literally all he is.

It's not really defending Butera.  Its more remarking on the irony that the 'punishment' for Iannetta's historically inept year so far (he makes Joyce et al look like Babe Ruth in comparison) is that Butera gets demoted.

It's rather like the old whipping boys.  One simply does not strike the Prince, so one must instead strike his playmate.
