Angels call up Carlos Perez

Recommended Posts

Henry, there is no projected upside to Butera based on past performance, he was just a placeholder. His demotion was only contingiant on something better showing itself in the organization.

Even if Ianetta was batting .300 the decision to go with cheaper in house solution to improve that position would have taken place. Maybe the timetable was accelerated or maybe Perez forced the decision by his play but it still was inevitable.

Completely agree. I think the move is the right one but it's rare that a backup gets penalized rather than has the opportunity to take advantage of the starter's ineptitude.

Possibly because Butera's upside is the 10 OPS+ he's currently at.  Butera's .190 average this season is better than his career average.   As a side note props to Chris Ianetta for being so awful he actually has a NEGATIVE OPS+.

That's a level of suckitude that almost demands being celebrated.

I agree that Ianetta's struggles have everything to do with this - the other options would have been to put Ianetta on the DL (and I'm actually a little surprised they didn't) or DFA Ianetta (and they probably were not going to do that to a team veteran a month into the season). However, Butera's got a .190 ERA right now and hasn't really been a defensive wizard, AND he's the newbie so he didn't have proven past success with the Angels to look at, as Ianetta does...so he really hasn't been doing much to cement his spot on the team. Even if Ianetta had been batting .300, with Perez doing so well in SLC, it might have just been a matter of time before this happened.

please

Haha, a -11 OPS+. Holy **** sticks that is an impressive level of suckitude.

Watching Carlos today just underscores how terrible our catching has been offensively and defensively this entire season.

Amazing what a difference one guy can make, but he's already showing us he's ready to be here.

Super impressed and can't wait to see what tomorrow brings! (If he isn't benched)

He doesn't have the kind of name that lends well to Scioscia nicknames. "Carlosy?" "Perezy?"

Those just don't sound right.

Ergo, he sits.

Actually "Carlito" is the nickname normally used for Carlos.

Sounds just fine.

Ergo, he plays.

Oh wait, he's not a veteran, you're right "He sits".
