Gammon's mentions Colon, Feldman and AJ Burnett. Says Angels are most interested in Burnett. Gammon's says the Angels think he can be a pretty good pitcher for them down the stretch.

2 things... 1. He'd obviously have to agree to go to the West coast for 2 months (everyone knows he loves the east coast). 2. He'd have to agree to waive his player option for 2015 because the Angels aren't going to that the chance that he can go up and make somewhere inbetween 12-15 million.

Says its interesting that no one seems to be interested in Colon. Mentions taking on a contract with someone involved in the biogenesis thing. Says Colon will stay with Mets. Thinks there's a chance Burnett moves this weekend.

Why would AJ waive his player option?

...and it is not like he can waive it right now.  All he has to do is say "sure I will waive it" and put his hands behind his back and cross his fingers just in case he sucks down the stretch and does not think he can make money on the market.

Burnett has said he might retire....he might prefer having the option of retiring or signing with an East coast team for 2015, as opposed to playing w/ the Angels in 2015 if the option vests....probably could sign for close to the price in his current contract....

Burnett does pitch in a hitting happy ballpark.

With that said, a 1.38 WHIP and 4.30 ERA are pretty high for the NL.

I'd rather have Rasmus put into that spot.

With as many extra innings games the Angels seem to play, I like Rasmus role right now.

Exactly. The fact is, we don't have a single pitcher outside of Shoemaker that can routinely go beyond 6 innings. The bullpen does a lot of innings and Rasmus is key to that, especially since Wilson is liable to explode at any time.

I especially like Burnett because he is a power pitcher, which is typically the model for success in the postseason. Again, outside of Shoemaker and Santiago, we don't have a lot of power pitching, which was lost with the injuries to Richards and Skaggs.

Burnett also brings postseason experience from his time with the Yanks and Pirates. Outside of Weaver and Wilson, our entire staff doesn't have a lot of postseason experience.

Neither did the 2002 staff.

Good point.  Did not think about it like that.

Washburn and ortiz were scary during that run.

Thankfully lackey stepped up.

Id rather not leave it to luck like that again.

We already have Shoemaker and Santiago that have more than stepped up.

They are both pitching like aces at the moment.

Why are people so in love with the idea of bringing these old, garbage pitchers over from the NL and plugging them right into our rotation in the middle of a penant race?

because the replacement for leblanc right now is randy wolf...an even worse garbage nl pitcher

I'd take a chance on Burnett if he was willing to play with the team for two months. If he wants to retire after the season, he can come play on a contending team for two months and get another shot for a WS title, then drive off into the sunset.

I get that but why add another year of salary for roughly 5 starts?  Were going to plug someone who's garbage in that spot anyway, might as well use our in house options.

5 starts?

Remember that, we will:

1) most likely be in the postseason, which will require additional starts from our staff, and

2) be down to 5 men next year, with skaggs out till 2016 and richards possibly coming back up to a month into the season. Sosh said ideally you want to be 9 starters deep. With Grich back next year, our 6th starter is michael roth.

Because they are better than NL castoff Randy Wolf

You should not see any starts from your 5th starter in the postseason.

And offseason is much better time to get a starter either through trades or free agency.

I agree its better to get a starter thru trade or free agency in the offseason. Much better.

While we may not need a 5th starter in the postseason, we may need a 4th starter in the later rounds, otherwise we are going to ask people to pitch on 3 days rest.

Right now, that 4th starter is CJ Wilson, who is good, at his best, for like 5 innings 3 ER. I keep having flashbacks to him giving up that 3 run bomb to Fielder in the 2011 all star game, promptly losing home field advantage for the rangers in the WS.

Appier was even worse. And keeping Aaron Sele of the post season roster was a very good thing.

Unless you like Cahill, Buerhle or Dickey (just throwing out names) for next year and you can make a reasonable deal now....why not?

@Ken_Rosenthal: Sources confirm report by @pgammo that #Angels had interest in #Phillies’ Burnett. Talks stalled, however… (1/3)

@Ken_Rosenthal: According to @pgammo, #Angels wanted Burnett to waive player option for 2015. Difficult to imagine Burnett agreeing to that… (2/3)

@Ken_Rosenthal: Burnett option will be worth at least $10M and as much as $12.75M. Presumably #Angels wanted him off books to avoid luxury tax. (3/3)

Burnett is a basket case but has by far the best arm of the trade options. If he was at his best he could be a huge help but that's a big if for him. I'd definitely pass if he won't wave the option.
