Sinkholes are a major issue around the state, and the problem is that you never know where one is going to form. They have swallowed houses, roads and businesses. A lot of the state sits on limestone, and it is eroded underground by water. You can't survey an area and tell whether it is prone to sinkholes, and there is little that you could do with the information if you could.

The obvious solution is don't buy land in a swamp

That's the thing. You don't have to be near a swamp or a marshy area to have an issue with sinkholes. They have popped up in urban areas as well. One ate part of the lot at a BMW dealership in Tampa. Another ate part of the showroom at a Corvette museum. A couple in Gainesville had their entire house disappear into one while the hole was being repaired (this involves dumping large amounts of concrete into the hole).
