5 Miami Beach police officers charged after rough arrests of scooter operator, bystander

Action starts at the 6:30 mark.

Nice that they threw the book at them, with that heavy first degree misdemeanor charge.

An abuse of a citizen by an agent of the government should carry far more weight than an abuse of a citizen by another citizen.

I didn’t say everyone did.

You don’t need a gun to do evil.

Try to stay focused, please.

Maybe it's time to disarm most of the police force of deadly weapons. There is too much shoot to kill going on when it isn't warranted. There can be officers with weapons but on a limited basis with extreme training instead of a few weeks at the academy shooting range.

That's how we do it over here. Armed response units. Veteran police officers are selected, then highly trained, and only then are used for incidents with known firearms or for the protection of major sites (airports etc). They are the back-up to the main force on emergency stand-by 24/7.

The idea of the average British copper having a sidearm is frightening. They are not a particularly intelligent or empathetic selection of human beings as those sorts of people tend to be drawn to other professions and I would imagine it's the same over there. High risk, average pay, poor schedule, and pretty much everyone dislikes you for doing it doesn't make for a great career choice for the sane and the talented, so we end up having grunts with guns, pepper spray, and tasers wandering our streets.

Personally I would double the starting salary to attract a better standard of person into the police force to begin with. Better people = better coppers. Better coppers = better decision making and a much safer service.

I agree with this. As it is now, a high school diploma is all that is needed.

So what happens to the unarmed officer when the “routine” traffic stop turns violent? How does that officer deal with that threat?
