1. His health

2. Next year's crop of FA SP will be much better and I'd rather they have used money on one of those arms, not Garza.

I think Garza wants to play on the west coast, so the Angels might have that advantage. 4/55 would be a perfectly decent contract for him. Anything more though and I don't think it's worth it.

His stuff is lights out and a legit #2 when everything is working, plus he's still fairly young still as pitchers go.

 

Two straight years of arm injuries.  Gigantic red flag.

I'd rather see them sign a guy for two seasons, than commit to Garza for four or five. If I'm Garza's agent, I'm asking for CJ Wilson's contract, 5/77.5. Why would you not?

The D'Backs and potentially the Blue Jays are the only real threats to getting Garza IMO.  However, I could see the Blue Jays going after Santana as he isn't as much of a health risk and the D'Backs have the pieces to get Price/Samardzija.  Also, I doubt the D'Backs go over 3 years for a FA SP.

Eh, I don't think the Dbacks will be as big of threat everyone is making them out to be. Towers said the only move they'll make will be for a "very front line starter", something Garza isn't. I can see them trading for Samardzija now that the Cubs missed on Tanaka. The real threat is the Blue Jays, IMO

Only do it if it's a 3 year deal, we need a another veteran signed to a minor league deal to pitch in AAA (I like Clayton Richard as a possibility), if we don't sign Garza, sign a veteran to a 1 or 2 year deal max. Baker, Hammel, Capuano, Maholm seem like the best bets. Garza on a 3-year deal, Richard, and a minor league deal for Andrew Bailey would make me a happy Halos fan.

I'm guessing the 69 games he missed in 2012 with a right elbow injury and the 84 games he missed in 2013 with a right shoulder injury would be the reason for the concern.

 

I understand that, but to me, every pitcher is a risk for injury.

I (and the teams payroll) could live with 4/55, but I believe we'll be able to sign somebody much better next year for around 6/115. I would go the safer route this year, sign a guy to a 1/2 year deal and hope we can compete with what we have.
