Angels Claim Josh Wall

The Angels have claimed right-hander Josh Wall off waivers from the Marlins, according to Angels vice president of communications Tim Mead (on Twitter). Wall, 26, was one of the three pitchers the Marlins received from the Dodgers in exchange for Ricky Nolasco.

Wall was a second-round pick of the Dodgers back in 2005 and has allowed 17 runs in 12 2/3 Major League innings to this point in a pair of brief big league callups. He's been much better at the Triple-A level, particularly with the Marlins, making the claim a bit of a surprise. Wall pitched to a 3.27 ERA with 8.6 K/9 and 3.3 BB/9 for Miami's Triple-A affiliate this season, albeit in a small 22-inning sample size.

In 100 Triple-A relief appearances spanning 103 innings, Wall has a 4.54 ERA with 8.6 K/9 and 3.8 BB/9. Wall appeared in Baseball America's list of Top 30 Dodgers prospects six times from 2005-12, peaking at No. 15 prior to the 2008 season.

He'll be 27 to start next season. His BB/9 is 4.0 through his minor league career. And he had a 1.5 WHIP in 49.1 innings in AAA in 2013. He'll for right in. Good to see we're still making quality acquisitions.

This is just another indication of our horrific depth. Quite honestly it might be the worst in MLB due to Arte barely going above slot in the old Rule 4 draft rules and sacrificing 3 top picks signing Wilson, Albert Pujols and Hamilton.

I'd rather have John Wall as well, and then trade him to the Lakers.

Relief pitchers tend to be reclamation projects...failed starters, etc....so maybe worth a shot...cheaper than a Madsen or Burnett...

The fact the marlins let a player who cost the minimum go, nobody in the NL thought he was worth a 40 man spot and that the Astros, Mariners and White Sox passed implies either we have terrible depth or or scouts are a few standard deviations better than all the teams listed above.
