Wow you don't see an 18-year old get an invite to Spring Training very often...

One other stat I love, besides the OBP and SBs, is his GB/FB ratio.   He won’t hit a lot of lazy FBs, which would cut into his OBP/SBs potential.

A .395 OBP and 55 SBs in Class A ball at age 17 is crazy.

The Angels do not want to send Rada to Tri-City High A since it is a bad place for hitters to develop and messes with their confidence..

It likely wouldn’t affect him as much.

It’s the power guys hitting lots of FBs that it affects much more.

Can’t send an 18 year-old straight to AA from A ball.

Depends on your philosophy, maturity, development and skill. The Padres put Ethan Salas in AA at age 17. Back in the day, Trout and Harper were both in the majors at 19.

BP swing. Hands drifting, head isn't still. That's not his actual swing. It's becoming more and more common too. You watch guys like Vera and Denzer Guzman before their signings became official. Compare their swings then and now. Videos of BP sessions are becoming more ridiculous and less useful every year.

That actually doesn't really affect the Angels. They have a contract with the organization, not the ballpark. For example, the Angels A Ball affiliate used to be the Cedar Rapids Kernels. When they went their separate ways, the Kernels didn't cease to exist. They worked out a deal with the Twins.

I'm hoping the Angels leave the Northwest League altogether soon, but it doesn't seem like that will be the case. Since minor league restructuring, trans have much less say over where their affiliates play, and most of the West Coast teams use the NWL for high A.

NWL should be the low A.

Lol.  Even as a minor league deal, this is a wtf move.

Hasn't pitched in the majors since 2019 and had an 11.51 ERA and 2.25 WHIP in limited innings at AAA last year.

I remember when he had some prospect juice to him.  He used to throw 100 in his sleep and his slider would on occasion hit 91. Dude never came close to touching what he should have been.

Basically the Angels just signed Dominican Jepsen.

Here's my detailed scouting report on Sano:

Big man, big swing, big miss, hit ball far.

Has lost a lot of weight, but has a history of issues mixed in with the power hitting.

Can’t hurt to bring him in on a minor league deal.

I don't trust big boys to continue to hit for power when they lose their girth. I think it's just a general misunderstanding of strength training and biomechanics.

Simply losing 50 lbs won't make you a better power hitter. Prince Fielder experienced this. Nutrition and increased cardiovascular work will make an obese man healthier, yes. Will it make him stronger? No, in fact it's frequently quite the opposite. But a greater focus on strength training will, most of the time.

As an example, you watch the "World's Strongest Man" competition. None of them have 6-pack abs. In fact, most of them, you may even consider slightly overweight, which is false, but that's neither here nor there.

And then there's motion. Your body is highly adaptable and becomes accustomed to moving a certain way at one weight and size. When you change that weight and size quickly, it can frequently throw things off. Hitting is a skill that needs to be frequently fine-tuned and if even one small thing is off, the whole thing doesn't work.

Kevin Maitan ability at age 15 was likely greater than age 17. The body changed, rather quickly in his career, and his swing was never right again. A lot of that was between the ears too, but some of it was certainly physical. Even after he lost the freshman 50 and turned it into muscle, his body still didn't move the same, and as competition increased, he simply couldn't keep up.

A 1.10 ERA in winter ball.  Other teams also do this, sometimes you find a clean peanut.
