Mederos has never produced good results, even in college. I know he was a 6th-round pick and supposedly has good stuff, but at some point, the dude actually has to, ya know, pitch well...

Yeah he's never put up numbers, but he was drafted as a project and I think they are still trying to figure that out, there is something happening with him mechanics wise. His arm slot is off a bit from last year -- slightly more over the top and his arm action is significantly slower.  Not sure if they are trying to have him learn to throw with an easier/more fluid motion or just trying to get his curve to break harder and create a separation of sorts between his breaking balls but his arm action is definitely altered.

I honestly don't think they are looking for results performance wise right now.  I think the biggest issue may be that they have a guy who was drafted as a project had him in the majors within 18 months and are having him do all this in AA which has become the true litmus test. Both of their A ball parks tend to help pitchers -- so maybe they want him in a tougher pitching environment but you'd think they would try to get him to work on those things in an atmosphere that might get him to buy into it a bit.

Ill be honest with you, he seems like the sort of guy body wise that would benefit from a pure drop and drive delivery, it would eliminate some of that lean he does to his left as part of the follow through and might aid in his control -- the flip side is that with his arm strength being what it is, that may generate even more movement and worse command..  But there has to be a reason why they are having him slow his arm action down.

I don’t blame FG at all. The Angels don’t have the greatest rep as it is, and we’re in a year where Jackson Holliday, Even Carter, Wyatt Langford and Jackson Chourio have all floundered. So of course they’d be skeptical over Rada and Dana.

Schanuel in essence becomes the necessary case study for the Angels as a whole. If he performs in this his rookie season where the hyped others have flopped, then it will somehow add legitimacy to the organization.

As to be expected, Fangraphs isn't so high on the Angels farm, or as rosy on Rada or Dana as Angels fans are.

Honesty FG used to be really good on with their prospects ranking. however they have fallen and reading their scouting reports, it seems like they at best watched a few games or innings.

1. They've mention Rada looks overmatched, however he's been hitting over 300. Similar to last year where he started off slow and than took of.

2. Dana, they really game his an 50 grade fastball and have him at 92 to 95, and they clearly haven't watched him. Yet, watching four of his starts, he is easily sitting 94 to 96 and getting it past hitter.

3. kent, I would say his fastball is more of an 55 grade pitches with potential to be a 60 grade pitch.  It has a lot of movement and sink on it. His change- up has also taken that next step and has some good drop and sink.

Their minor league stuff completely fell off during Covid and hasn't really recovered.  They are probably just understaffed like the Angels scouting department.

Brett Kerry has a no-hitter through 6 innings for Salt Lake tonight.

Gave up a leadoff single in the 7th.  Still a great outing so far, though: 7 innings, 1 hit, 2 BB, 0 runs, 4 K.   Only at 77 pitches.

The irony in this is that FanGraphs’ understaffed prospect staff just hired a contributor (Travis Ice) who used to work in the Angels understaffed scouting staff.

Ha!  Wonder if he's a bit taken aback being part of such a big team for a change (two people).
