I'm concerned

I think Ohtani is going to be even better this year, than the last two: combining his 2021 hitting with his 2022 pitching, and maybe even surpassing both and putting up 10-11 WAR. The Angels are going to need to give him $50 million a year, unfortunately.

Just an FYI, in case you were wondering what my current thoughts on Ohtani were.

Yep agree, kinda of a double edged sword.

Looking like he’s setting up to have a prolific year. 

I try not to think about him leaving unfortunately I’m not confident the Halos will be able to retain him.

Really hope I’m wrong.

And let’s be honest:  Whoever signs Ohtani is going to get 2 or 3 years of amazing results, a couple of years of great to good results and 5 years of “he can’t do both anymore” for $60 million/year.

He’s my favorite player (along with Trout) but he’s turning 29 this year.  How many more years can he do both?  Will he still be starting 30 games and hitting 35 bombs as a 38 year old?  I won’t say he can’t do it because if anyone can, he can.  But he’s already had Tommy John surgery and what he does puts a lot of stress on his body.  And we don’t know how he will age because this is unprecedented.  

Unless the team commits to “cap” level payroll or above for the duration of the extension, it probably won’t be worth it.  

It’s going to sting terribly to watch him do amazing things for a half decade with another team.  But ultimately I can deal with it if that money is allocated in a way that lets the Angels be a perennial contender and not a disappointment with another aging superstar.

I guess they should trade him if they’re out of contention and get something for him. 
 

Hopefully they’ll be in all the way and then he walks into free agency but it’s going to sting either way.

Well, the good news is your preseason predictions usually completely backfire.

So look for Ohtani to get hurt and miss most of the year, with his future in doubt.

And we swoop in and get him at a discount.

10/500 is probably a reasonable guess for what he'll get on the FA market. Could even see him getting some sort of unique deal that allows him to make more than that in some way. In a global sense, the dude is the face of the sport, and he's well aware of that.
